I totally forgot about that potential reunion.

Still too much for just one full season to me...

You have to give up salary to take on 6.5 for next year. We can't afford him otherwise.

Depending on how much Sekera gets, they can add Pronger, let Spacek and Numminen (A little over $5 million combined) walk, and the defense won't be a whole lot more expensive with Butler or Weber filling the other open roster spot.

If they choose to move Tallinder and keep both Weber and Butler up, the money would be about a wash.

Butler-Pronger
Sekera-Rivet
Weber-Lydman
Paetsch

I could live with that.

adding pronger would be most effective if we kept tallinder. making room for him next year would be easy. kotalik-teppo-max-spacek.

two cagy vets(rivet-pronger) to go with our magnificant duo(lydman-tallinder). some kind of big name trade would help stir up the stale air from a few years ago. plus we have miller in net and lindy ruff on the bench.

get us to the playoffs with a big addition hockey gods.

ps. spacek has been playing great hockey.

Unfortunately, I think we all know the answer.................

Unless you are in Detroit or Toronto, the risk of trading away youth is a few seasons of rebuilding: the Buffalo consumer has no stomach to sit through a tanked season. Maybe this may change with a cup, but at this point Regier is running the team with ticket sales in mind.

I'm not buying it given the amount of quality young depth the organization currently has.

Just look at the young blueliners in the system:

Sekera
Butler
Weber
Gragnani
Myers
Brennan
Persson

The Sabres have the depth to move a good young blueliner in a deal and have them not really be decimated.

the Sabres have 41 million committed in salary next year and Sekera, Stafford, MacArthur, and Kaleta are RFA not counted in that total.

the money you see coming off the books is already eaten up by massive raises for Poms and Miller, as well as raises for Goose, Lydman, Tallinder, and Roy.

After RFA estimates, my guess is there is LESS than 3 million in salary space.... So trading Tallinder would almost be a must.

We need a sticky thread for this.... it seems someone has to clarify it everyday.

thanks for the clarification. i was aware of ufa and rfa status just not the increased salary for players under contract. if he makes our team that much better its worth it. i also like the idea of chris mentoring myers. though at the very least we could trade him after the season

unfourtunatly i don't like the odds of adding anyone to this roster.

after careful thought... id give up Sekera in a deal for Pronger.

Sekera, Gerbe, Paille, Tallinder ?

I think with Butler ready, Weber atleast 3rd pairing ready along with Myers and Brennan coming... i think it's worth it. Imagine what Pronger would do for Myers game, and Weber for that matter.

I think a defensemen like Pronger makes you a contender. If you have a 6 million dollar goalie, an elite #1 defensemen, and atleast a solid amount of offense, you should be a contender.

Spacek-Pronger
Lydman-Rivet

that's got to be the toughest, most physical, and experienced top 4 in the east.

Butler-Numminen

My concern is going too far in the other direction. How far away do the Sabres want to move from Regier's mobile, puck-moving defense? Campbell is gone and Sekera is out, what are the options at this point?

for this year? or for the future?

Pronger is a complete #1 defensemen. He moves the puck.

I think I trade Myers' "unsure" status before I trade Sekera in a Pronger deal

everyone keeps talking about paying pronger through next season...what exactly is stopping us from trading a few pieces and prospects to anaheim for him for this season, then trading him in off season to a desperate western conference and gaining back virtually all of what we'd have to give up?

hell, even if we were to give up a first round pick for him, we could gain one right back by trading him again, and potentially move even further up on the draft board.

You put it perfectly: Pronger is the #1 defenseman we would LOVE. Fills about 49 different holes on the team in one shot.

________

Now... I DROOL at the thought of what Myers *might* be. Hulk? H to the izzo? Jesus come backeth? All quite possible. But he could certainly fizzle out.

I KNOW what I get with Sekera, and I KNOW that he's a #4 at WORST. I trade a "prospect" for Pronger way before I trade one of our current, more valuable players (who has earned said title at such a young age already). You trade top prospects for players like Pronger in the hope that you eventually win the trade by a landslide.

I think contract is a huge factor. Assuming we are trading for Pronger for this year, and next year. Sekera becomes the money cut from salary that helps pay for Pronger while not neglecting our need to spend on a center (Connolly).

Sekera is going to be a 2.5-3.5 contract next year.

Myers ceiling is waaay too high to trade him for a 2 year player.
this year:
Spacek-Pronger
Lydman-Rivet
Butler-Numminen
next year
Butler-Pronger
Lydman-Rivet
Weber-Myers

He's affordable if the Sabres don't bring back Spacek and jettison Tallinder. It'd cost some serious young talent and he'd likely only stay one season. It'd be great if he could be persuaded to re-sign to be a mentor for Myers. I think the Sabres would have to give up one of their top young dman (Sekera, Butler, or Weber), a good young forward or prospect (Paille, Gerbe or Gogulla) and their 1st round pick. I could live without Sekera, Paille and a 1st.

The only problem with this is that i'm sure Myers would have to be apart of the package going back.

Myers
Stafford
1st

for

Pronger, or something like that.

See, this guy is thinking.

But if you do trade for Pronger he isn't a guy you would want to get rid of. He fills a ton of holes and is exactly what Buf is missing.

As much as I would love to see the sabres land a blockbuster deal, I can't be a fan of this idea. The cost on Pronger would be way too high for just over 1 year. We would probably have to give up a good portion of our future including our guys in the minors and draft picks.

Now if Pronger would sign an extension here for say another 2-4 years then I would consider it.

But that makes two assumptions.

1) Our front office is actually willing to pay the cash that a guy like Pronger would command.

2) Pronger wants to sign an extension (Remember Buffalo is the place free agents least want to go to)
