Penner

Hey would you guys have any interest in taking a chance on Dustin Penner?

If so, would you trade reasoner for him?

Thanks

Yes and Yes

I think he is a guy who would thrive in a low pressure environment, and lets be honest...the UFAs aren't going to be beating down our door this off season. Plus, we will need to hit the salary floor somehow.

He would easily be an upgrade over a couple of guys in our Top 6.

However, I am sure that it would take more to get him.

No.

Overpaid, massive contract.

No thank you. Edmonton can keep Kevin Lowe's screw-ups.

Yes, but not an extremely overpaid useless player like Dustin Penner.

Trust me when I say he's useless. I see him all season long, both in person, and on TV.

Agreed. The only reason he makes what he makes is because Lowe was trying to, and succeeded in cheesing off a couple of GMs.

He is a young big forward who has two 40+ point seasons under his belt, and yes he is having a poor season this year.

However he is young, and he may also benefit from being in a situation where he wasn't aquired for a high price...and certainly has much more pressure on him in Edmonton than he ever had in Anaheim when he appeared to be a very nice power forward in the making.

IMO these are the kinds of players the Thrashers need to target, players who have worn out their welcome on their teams, tied up for a decent length of contract, who have potential to be very good players down the line.

More importantly, we could probably get him on the cheap as far as the assets needed to aquire him.

Look, if we wait until UFA season we are going to have to overpay to get the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th options that we want to sign anyway. And I promise you, any possible UFAs that will sign here will have just as many faults as Penner, but probably without as much potential upside.

Go for it. What, exactly, do we have to lose? It would probably take more to get him here, but now would be the best time to do it, because he doesn't appear very marketable.

Yes, he's having a bad year, but at least he's not Sean Avery.

With Visnovsky down, would you do Penner for Schneider? We could use his powerplay QB abilities.

He's already on the plane. I helped him pack as soon as I saw this.

I don't think Penner wanted anything to do with moving to Edmonton, but couldn't turn down that kind of offer.

I think this guy is playing to be traded.

Abso-freakin-lutely. If DW can snag anything near Penner's quality with Schnieder...well, I'd still want him to get fired, but it would be nice to turn Brad Larsen and Ken Klee into Dustin Penner.

There is absolutely no way I would want a 3rd line player (and that is all Penner is) at 4.25 for 4 years. That was the worst offer sheet ever proposed, and Edmonton is going to have to live with it.

If he ever breaks 60 points we can consider it.

You've got to wonder if that wasn't just another case of average guys on a good team getting overvalued. Sure, they were a pretty dominant line on that cup run, but were they really any better than Carolina's BBC line was that one playoff run? We all know how good Brind'Amour is, but can you name the other two parts of that line or consider offering either of them the kind of contract Penner has?

One was Erik Cole who I hear the Oilers might move.

The third was I think Bates Battaglia?

How'd I do?

You got 'em, but, have either ever recaptured the success of that one playoff run or would you consider giving them the size contract Penner got?

I say go for it. The risk is that Thrashers end up with an overpaid third-liner, but this isn't Gomez or Briere, that is the contract isn't that long, three more seasons after this one. I'd like to see what could do with Peverley and Kozlov or Kovalchuk on the left wing.
