Toronto FC 2010 thread

Anyone pumped for the upcoming season?

We got the best Canadian midfielder De Rosario signed and just signed a young promising Argentine forward in Vitti (23). As well as a Swiss keeper in Frei.

Can we sticky this to go long with Raptors and Jays thread?

Looking good!

We definately need 2 more good central defenders.

I wonder if Kaberle will show up again this year at a TFC game.

If it gets the traffic to warrant it, sure. At the very least I'll link it in the sticky of popular threads. I'll try to remember to do it tonight, PM me in a day or two if I forget about it.

Freddy went to Benfica in Portugal in summer of 2007
Wasn't able to crack the starting XI (apparently just not good enough) and in summer of 2008 went on season-long loan to AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1.

As for TFC- sure we could use one, preferrably TWO CB's but I believe in Mo + JC, just lookin forward to the season ahead- hopefully plenty of offence with our new additions of Vitti and DeRo but I FOR ONE am reaaaalyyyy looking forward to seeing Chad Barrett play with us for the FULL year- I have a feeling he is really underrated and has been lost among all the hype surrounding DeRo coming to T.O.

Look out for it- dare I call it now, CHAD BARRETT WILL LEAD TFC IN SCORING BY YEAR'S END (barring major injury of course)

If it's TFC you were following maybe you were thinking of Maurice Edu

Last year was transferred to Rangers in Glasgow,Scotland- not doing THAT well he's with their reserves

(can't access facebook from here...)

It was a great time last year - over 2000 people I think. This year the opener won't be anywhere near that - we open in KC which is much further than Columbus is. The second game is in Columbus but because it's not the opener I don't think the numbers will be there either.

I hope TFC opens in DC or Chicago next year.

kind of a stupid question (because I dont know about football)

What is the chance that the FC cause many younger kids to play at higher levels, which in the future will make us able to start to field teams that can compete (but probably not win in) the World cup?

or is Canada just destined to never be a soccer nation?

Soccer/Football already has a huge following in Canada with many people playing it and watching it. TFC has to have a certain number of Canadians on the team and will likely get more people interested in playing - so it should have some impact imo. I don't think the impact will be huge for Team Canada - mainly because the CSA (Canadian Soccer Association) is poorly run. The players and fans aren't happy with the CSA. We also lose some players to other countries (Owen Hargreaves, Jonathan De Guzman) because of better opportunities and possibly because of the CSA.

TFC also has an academy for youth players - if done right it could have an impact on the number of quality players from here.

It obviously can't hurt. It still has a long way to go as Hockey is our primary sport.

I cant speak for the rest of Canada (though I know Montreal has a strong following too) but soccer is pretty big around the GTA. Of course I still talk to some ppl who dont know what TFC is.

i dont think canada is anywhere near playing in the world cup, look at america, they have taken ages to develop into a nation that can compete, and even now they have along way to go in terms of coaching etc.

DeRosario alone makes TFC a much better team. A midfielder who will dominate in the offensive zone.....awesome playmaker, can slash in and is a very good finisher. Watching DeRob and Guevara feed off each other will be magical and produce excitement not yet seen in TFC nation. Chad Barrett will be even better this year....Love how the ball follows him around and he's always looking to score !!! Add Vitti to the mix and Dichio as a super-sub and we finally have a team that can win without having to shutout their opponent. Agreed we need better central defenders as Marshall looks lost sometimes and Velez has braincramps once in awhile. We need to acquire a very intelligent and consistent cenTreback. Also Sam Cronin was a super selection in the draft. This kid knows the game, plays very hard and can cross the ball very accurately into the box !!! Croner will be longtime TFC midfielder. Once he proves himself TFC will replace Robinson with him. CAN'T WAIT !!!!
