Trades that ALMOST happened?

I am really curious to if anyone has heard about trades that were in the works, but just couldn't be finished.

To Toronto: Sean Hill
To Carolina: Karel Pilar

This was being reported on Mojo Radio here in Toronto

Hill wanted a contract extension (2+ years), as well as cash.

In Columbus, Doug MacLean was all over some "good young prospect" that he refused to name. He sounded pretty disappointed that he didn't get the guy. Have no clue who it could've been though.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say the person was from Toronto's organization, given the rumored interest in Cassels.

Near the bottom,

General Manager Ken Holland said he talked twice Tuesday with Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford about center Ron Francis, but the Wings couldn’t guarantee Francis a spot in the lineup
i'm assuming he means when everyone is healthy

also, the Wings comment on the Bertuzzi/Moore thing in that article.

New Jersey had also reached a deal with Carolina for Hill (maybe the players involved will be reported sometime today), but Hill wanted the same extension. I'm not sure who it happened to first, but his agent killed both deals over cash.

I think Ferguson was given a small grace period by the NHL to try to come to terms with Hill, so NJ must have been first to decline and when they pulled out, it was right at the wire.....

A Habs insider on another forum (someone who's known about several moves in the past) said Gainey was working on another big trade. Rumour has it he was referring to O'Neill but things fell apart when he got injured.

Flyers offered Seidenberg and Radivojevic of Satan, Regier almost went for it at the end but insisted on getting Gagné.

There apparently was also a bidding war for Pronger with the Flyers and Leafs.
Supposedly it owuld have been a blockbuster including these names:

Handzus, Carter, Sharp and Pitkanen for Pronger Demitra and Sejna.
This deal took up most of Clarke's time.

We were also talking to Murray for Sykora and Prospal, they wanted Mike Richards included which wa sa no go.

Teezax, what is your source? Those are some big deals.

I must say I'm very surprised Regier would turn down a deal like that. Great return for Satan, and that Pronger deal is beyond huge..

Rumour has it that Sather wanted Hannu Toivonen for Leetch and were turned down by the Bruins

I heard this too.
This is why Vancouver took a while to trade Umberger instead of a 2nd to New York.

The Satan deal is bang on accurate, we tried to convince them not to take Gagné, and almost had them, but at the end he opted not to make the deal without Gagné.

My source is a guy named Eklund which has his own board, he writes for TSN and NHL.com and is/was part of the Flyers' organization so has many ties with the head honchos there. He was giving us up to the minute details about who Clarke was on the phone with. The Pronger almost happened, but Clarke decided it was too much to give up. Apparently he took Pitkanen off the market and that's what brought discussions to a halt. I thought it would have been a huge trade and likely to happen as Clarke asked some vets to defer some of their contract money so he can land a big fish, so it was pretty close, not closer than Satan though, that one was 90% done right at the deadline but halted because of Gagné.

I read somewhere that he was after Komisarek and/or Hainsey. Don't know what he was offering though.

I'd buy that. I'm sure he was offering some combination of veterans - Cassels, Wright, Sanderson, Lachance, Richardson, Spacek...

Spacek and a pick for Hainsey and a pick would've been funny b/c the computer offered me that trade on NHL 2004 (and I took it).

Bob Pulford yesterday said he got tons of call about Arnason, Bell and Daze but said the deals were basically laughable and wasn't really looking to deal any of them anyway.

I would personnaly think that it was Hainsey in Montreal... before Habs got Dowd, it was rumored that Hainsey was about to leave for Colombus.... I can't see for who except Cassels Habs would have traded him

One wonders why Armstrong was pursuing Leetch in the first place.

Yeah, I heard Umberger for Morozov was on the table.
