GDT: PHI vs. NJD 3/9/04

vs.

GAME: Philadelphia Flyers (35-17-12-6) at New Jersey Devils (35-20-11-2).

TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

This could be the week that determines if the New Jersey Devils can still win their second straight division title and sixth in eight years. The defending Stanley Cup champions will play the first of two games in five days against the team they're chasing for first place in the Atlantic when they host the Philadelphia Flyers.

These rivals face off for the final time during the regular season on Saturday in Philadelphia, where New Jersey could potentially take over the division lead. The Devils are five points back, and have a home game against the Western Conference-worst Chicago Blackhawks bridging the meetings with the Flyers. Philadelphia has a much tougher matchup in between, with Thursday's game against Dallas, which is unbeaten in nine straight.

With wins in all three games during that span and a Flyers loss Thursday, New Jersey would be a point ahead of Philadelphia. If the opposite happens, the Devils would be 11 points back with 11 games to play.

The Devils, who finished a point ahead of the Flyers for last season's division crown, are looking to win this season series for the sixth time in seven years. Philadelphia has won just eight of the last 34 regular-season meetings (8-19-7), including a 1-2-1 mark this season. Both teams have been inconsistent lately, with the Flyers going 4-5-1-1 over the last three weeks and the Devils at 7-7-1-1 during the past month.

Martin Brodeur made 25 saves as New Jersey beat Carolina 4-1 on Saturday, closing its five-game road trip at 2-2-0-1. "It's definitely a good road game," Brodeur said. "The stage that we're at I think we're going to take a performance like that before going home."

Though Patrik Elias had a goal Saturday, he should be very happy to get back to New Jersey. He had nine points during a three-game homestand before the road trip, and has totaled 40 points in 34 games at Continental Airlines Arena this season compared to 23 in 34 road games.

The Flyers have a new defenseman on their roster to try to stop Elias and the Devils. Philadelphia acquired Vladimir Malakhov from the New York Rangers on Monday for prospect Rick Kozak and a draft pick. The Flyers also dealt defenseman Chris Therien, who had spent his entire 10-year career with Philadelphia, to Dallas for two draft picks.

"Malakhov is much better with the puck and a better skater (than Therien)," Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. "He can do things for the team that Chris couldn't." Philadelphia also might welcome captain Keith Primeau back to the lineup. The veteran center, sidelined since Feb. 12 due to a concussion, could help a penalty-killing unit that has slipped to 20th in the NHL. "It would be awesome to get him back," winger Mark Recchi said. "Obviously he's one of our top penalty killers. Our penalty killing has to get a lot better."

The battle for the Atlantic Division is on this week. If we lose this game, the Devils are 3 behind us. If we win, we increase the lead to 5. A win over Dallas on Thursday would help us and then we face the Devils again on Saturday. This is a big week for the Flyers, make or break us. We lose these games and we go back to where we were last year. We don't need that again.
Everyone has to play their game. Defense has been tweaked with the addition of Malakhov and the loss of Therien. Primeau is most likely due back tonight. We play like we have been and we will win.

Flyers 4-2.

As muh as I'm hoping for a win tonight, we have to get incredible goaltending because MArty ain't going to give us more than 2 goals tonight at home. The division title is in our hands and can easily be taken away this week. Hope the guys are focused as they were the last time we beat those Debbies. Here's wishing Malakhov found his calling in Philly and has a stellar performance against his former allies.

Philly 3 (Malakhov, Zhamnov, Gagné)
New Jersey 2 (Langenbrunner, Madden)

Little update of who is playing/not playing:

The Philadelphia Flyers will attempt to increase their lead in the Atlantic Division over the New Jersey Devils tonight at the Continental Airlines Arena in a key game for both teams (7:30 p.m.).

The Flyers lead the Devils by five points in the division, although New Jersey has two games in hand.

Help along the blue line is on its way for Philadelphia, as the team was forced to play with just five true defensemen during Saturday’s 2-1 loss in Washington. Veteran defenseman Vladimir Malakhov was acquired from the New York Rangers yesterday, while Marcus Ragnarsson will return from a minor shoulder injury. Danny Markov served a one-game suspension on Saturday and will also be back in the lineup.

Randy Jones and Freddy Meyer, who made their NHL debuts on Saturday, have been returned to the Phantoms.

John Slaney, who had two assists on Friday night in a 5-3 win over Ottawa, remains with the team as long-time defenseman Chris Therien was dealt to Dallas yesterday for two draft picks.

The Devils defeated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night, 4-1. John Madden tallied a goal and an assist, while goaltender Martin Brodeur made 25 saves to record the victory.

Brodeur has started 22 of the last 23 games for New Jersey, and is expected to get the call in net tonight. Robert Esche, who has won his last two starts, will be back between the pipes for the Flyers.

Alex Zhamnov, acquired in February by the Flyers, will attempt to stretch his point-scoring streak to eight games. In his last seven, Zhamnov has four goals and six assists.

In the teams’ last meeting on February 10 in Philadelphia, rookie goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 35 saves in a 4-1 Flyers win. Simon Gagne, Mark Recchi, Michal Handzus and Markov all scored for Philadelphia. Gagne and Markov’s goals came on the power play.

The Flyers return to the Wachovia Center for two games this week – Thursday against Dallas at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday afternoon against the Devils at 3:00 p.m. Saturday will be the last game of the season series between Philadelphia and New Jersey.

No mention of Preems, might just be a move by Hitch.

Well the way i see it our 3rd goal will be an empty netter, to give us the lead 3-1.
Then they will score with 20 secs left.

Trade deadline day is always weird though, with all the anxiety players have if they think they might be traded.

this is a statement game. we have to step up like we did against Ottawa and out play these guys.

I am interested in seeing Markhov play, hopefully he will be motivated(as his critics would say) playing for a team in the challenging for 1st place overall in the Conferense and making a run for the Cup.

BTW, I really hope to see Preems back tonight.

Would you rather have Satan or Gagne? If Gagne was traded for Satan today, would Satan be available or able to get to Philly on time for the game?

As per Daily News Live, according to Ed Moran, Keith Primeau will NOT PLAY tonight, he was getting dressed and was starting to not feel well. He is currently in the hotel and will be a scratch tonight with concussion symptoms, and could still be another week.

I'm really surprised that the Devils didn't pick up a defenseman before the deadline. I like our chances against them when guys like Brown and White are getting significant time, not to mention the two rookies. If Stevens doesn't come back on top of his game I can't see the Devils getting too far.

The trivia question I was the quick to answer the trivia question (what 2 players did the Flyers take in the first round of the 2003 draft) what the hell kind of a trivia question was that? I was expecting more trivia where the answers are Ed Hospadar and Andre Faust.

On the intermission, I actually think Al Morganti is right, not that I am underestimating the power of the Devils, but they might be the team I want round 1 if not the Islanders.
