Because he pretty much never gets scored against. He's very good defensively.

I'd gamble a 4th-round pick on him to see if he re-discovers some of his offence, if not, I've got an expensive 4th-liner for two years and then let him walk as a UFA.....
I'd do that depending on who else gets shipped out. If we're trading a bunch of forwards, then we could use Eaves in the Top 9.

Really? I'm done with Eaves. We tried him on the Top 9. Didn't work. That's why he's playing on the 4th line now.

Try and get a 3rd for him, then use the salary cap to resign LaRose.

He had a bad start to the season, and never really got going. Pretty much all season he's been on the fourth line, playing 6-8 minutes a game, no PP time, and playing on the PK a bit. The brilliant coaching staff hasn't really given him a chance to do anything else.

Why would Carolina be sending a pick along with Ruutu? I doubt the Canes would make that trade straight up let along adding anything.

Tried him for what, five games? With no PP time?

Don't forget the Brind'amour "try-out" that has lasted the whole season.

Speaking of which, anyone want Brind'amour? Please?

I'm looking over the 'Canes numbers.

Brind'Amour's plus/minus has to be a typo, no?

Panthers would take him for a pick, but I doubt you want to trade in the division.

Up until December 20th, he was playing about 15 minutes a night on average. Managed to grab 5 assists in those 27 games. On pace for 0 goals, 15 assists in 82 games. Clearly, he deserved to be on the 3rd line.

We'll take Staal in exchange for Backman and four of the goals we scored this evening. (We'd like to keep the empty net goal.)

(Seriously, it's just two bad losses. If that's all it takes to have to blow up the team, every team in the NHL needs a rebuild.)

I would love for the Jackets to go out and get Whitney again.

He averaged 14:07 in October, then his ice time dropped off to 9:28 in November and 11:10 in December. I don't feel like looking up the exact ATOI for the first 27 games, but it looks to be more around 12 minutes/game during that time period. And don't forget that that includes a lot of PK time.

So you're right that he was on the 3rd line for more than the five games I previously mentioned, but that includes: (1) No PP time (2) Garbage linemates like Brind'amour.

He hasn't been given a chance to produce. He's been in the doghouse while certain other players get ridiculous amounts of ice time while doing nothing most of the time.

And here I thought the Jackets never wanted to give up ANYTHING.

Found a funny. I was on NHL.com and wanted to check his raw numbers (goals for/against) and when I pulled up the Canes' plus/minus page they put Brind'Amour, all by his lonesome, on an extra page.

Stajan for Staal. Pretty close to the same number of points.
Ya, I know I'll get bashed.

What do you have in the vein of Centers and guys who have the upside of a power forward who might need a change of scenery?

Brind'Amour for a 7th, done.

I'm honestly convinced that the Canes best play over the past two years being at the same times that he is out of the lineup is absolutely no coincidence.

Centers that might be of any worth (not named Staal)? Cullen.
Power forwards that could use a change of scenery? nothing. I wouldn't even call Ruutu a power forward.

No, these two bad losses are just a accumulation of what the season has been like so far.

We enter January on a 4-game winning streak. We're dominant, we're doing everything right. We follow that streak with a 5-game losing streak, looking like a completely opposite team.

Just last week, we beat San Jose in San Jose, and completely blew Phoenix out of the water. We end the roadtrip on a high, get a week off for rest/practice, and follow it up with these past two games.

I find it interesting everyone on these boards can spell Eric Staal, yet everybody seems to think that his brother is spelled Jordan Stall. But I guess that has more to do with the quality of the trade proposals as well.

People respect and realize Staal's value, but think Stall is garbage.
