Interesting look at the drury-morris deal

interestingly four teams are all connected to this deal a year and half later:

to cal: drury, yelle
to col: morris, mccamond, shantz

then:

to cal: mccamond
to col: 5th rounder

same year:

to buf: briere
to phx: gratton

summer:

to col: ballard
to cal: warrener, reinprecht
to buf: drury, begin

and now:

to col: gratton, vaananen, 2nd rounder
to phx: morris, ballard

so after a year and a half it shakes down for these 4 teams as:

colorado: gratton, vaananen, 2nd rounder, 5th rounder
buffalo: drury, briere
phx: morris, ballard
calagary: warrener, reinprecht, yelle

mccamond is back in calgary, shantz is in europe and begin was traded or claimed on waivers, still crazy how some of these players have played for 3 of these 4 teams in the past year and a half.

so, looking at each team
Calgary: GETS Yelle,Warrener,Reinprecht GIVES Morris, 5th rounder
Colorado: GETS Gratton,Vaananen,2nd,5th GIVES Drury,Reinprecht,Yelle
Buffalo: GETS Drury,Briere GIVES Warrener,Ballard,Gratton
Phoenix: GETS Morris,Ballard GIVES Vaananen,Briere,2nd

interesting

edited to add Yelle and correct typo

Whats even more interesting is that each team did pretty good when all the dust cleared....

I can't see a loser in that group!

oops thanks for clarifying that.

although if you believe the rumours out of Colorado at the time, they were apparently on the verge of waiving him....although I think they could still really use an effective 3rd liner like Yelle!

Pierre Lacoix got robbed in the Pheonix deal. Morris AND Ballard. I wouldn't have traded Morris or Ballard for either player they got straight up.

You tell me which of those 3rd liners the Avs should bench in favor of Yelle.

The Avs have no need for Yelle what so ever.
I'd take Yelle over Gratton fairly easily..

We win, then Phoenix, then Calgary, then VERY far behind the Avs, who got RIPPED on those deals. trust me. Gratton isnt worth the **** on my shoe. Vaananen wont be as good as Morris. but ballard as well!!! not many trades go Phoenix's way. but this one, hehehehehehehhehe. Lacioux is ****. not a GM i like.

Begin was effectively picked up at the waiver draft by the Habs. Good role player, nice sparkplug.

Nikolishin, Konowalchuk, Barnaby, Gratton, Hinote.

I would take Yelle before ANY of the above - he is better than any of them - Hands down.

Stephane Yelle is a better HOCKEY PLAYER than any of those guys.
He's not the scorer that Konowalchuk and Nikolishin can be at times. He's not as big as Gratton. He's not the agitatior that Barnaby is. He's not the clown that Dan Hinote is, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me to pick one player for my hockey team I'd take Yelle.

i'd take Yelle over Nikolishin, Gratton, and Hinote. Barnaby isn't really a comparible player as an agitator.

i'd venture to say that Yelle is exactly what Colorado needs.

Classic quote from Kevin Dineen to Chris Gratton during a CBJ-Sabres game "The best move this organization ever made was not trading for you." I believe that was during Kevin's last NHL game.

Honest opinion.

Yelle may not be exactly what Colorado needs there and I never said he was, but he is the best hockey player in that group. He does everything it takes to win and then some. I hope he retires a Flames. He's been that good for the team.

That looks pretty darn good from a Calgary, Buffalo and Phoenix standpoint.

That looks extremely ugly from a Colorado standpoint IMO.

As for Stephane Yelle, does anybody know Calgary's record without him in the lineup in this year? I'm guessing it would be at least 4 games under 500, if not more. With the exception of Iginla, that guy is the heart and soul of the Calgary Flames.

The word good is hard to apply to an O guy like Morris and a purebred stay at home with Ossi. I think at this point in time for the Avs franchise, a strong D is more important than a D that chips in once in a while on the offense. Ossi is about as solid as they come for his age, and should be a mainstay on the Avs blueline for a long time. debate whos "better" all you want but it boils down to who contributes most to what the team needs and the stay at home guy almost always gets the nod.

If the Avs kept Yelle, they wouldn't of needed to acquire at least one of those 4 guys....

konowalchuk is better then Yelle.

Barnaby is more valuble IMO to a team since he can do almost everything.
i miss Yelle though.

I'd have to agree, I mean Yelle has been dynamite since his been in Calgary, but over Konowalchuk? Thats crazy, just crazy. I'd take him over Niko, just cause Niko is old and injured now, Barnaby ain't really comparable, Hinote is a tough call, he has developmental room left so he might just be better in the end.
