IMO 2 things will happen:
1. He`ll take this and say FU to Carbo and Gainey and promptly be traded
2. He`ll take this and come back and play like a house on fire.
Gainey`s called out Kovalev before. It`s just a matter of how he responds.

Whatever.. Bob gave the team to Koivu today..
Seems like we can't keep both so..
This has nothing to do with a Koivu.
Its simply the fact Kovalev is becoming a distraction and needed to be dealt with. How Kovalev responds determines if he makes in through the year in Montreal.
Its becoming apparent who the coaches and management feel are causing a problem by recent moves.

Yes Kovy has not tried very hard lately but has anyone else seen just how slow has has gotten?
He has lost 1.5-2 steps since last year and that does not come back ever. He tries to do things like last year but he can't beat any d-man now. can't pull away from anybody even if he in on a breakaway.
He still has skills but he is down to the PP only, where he sits on the side boards distributing the passes.

Wow Gainey and Co. finally do what everyday fans have been calling for for YEARS.
S. Kostitsyn has been looking terrible almost all season and just now he gets punished, way to wake up and finally do something Gainey, hope it wasn't too much of a burden to you know...do your job.

Wow, Kovalev being told to sit a couple of games is crazy. I really didn't think it would ever happen

me thinks Gainey wants to see how the team reacts and plays without Kovalev in the lineup.
We play well without him and he's as good as gone (imo).

1 thing: Horsecrap.
Gainey isn't deciding between Koivu and Kovalev, I'll bet my house on that. Kovalev has already made Gainey's decision for him - he is either already gone - or will be barring a superhuman effort the rest of the way. Koivu is not going anywhere.

I'm hoping this is a "prevent injury" type of deal so we see Kovy traded, other than that why tell him to stay home?
Is he a distraction to the team?
Is he the problem right now?
Why couldn't Carbo put him on the 4th line and limit his icetime?
If you can promote grunts like Kostopolous, you can demote good players like Kovalev to the lower lines can't you?
I'm reading in between the lines and I think Gainey is trading Kovalev.

Defenetly! And if Gainey receives an interesting offer for Kovalev, I think that he will take it.
