London Free Press: No blockbuster announcements, but Burke says change is coming

http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Sports/2...8/8439146.html

Quote:
What he did say from a hockey standpoint is that he expects the March 4 trade deadline to be a busy time in the NHL in general, that he was offered a trade Tuesday and his staff spent yesterday looking into the player offered in terms of his character; that 10 days ago a team called offering him one of the Top 5 picks in the draft for defenceman Luke Schenn; that he believes whoever goes to the microphone in the NHL draft this summer will pick London Knights John Tavares as the No. 1 pick; and that he expects defenceman Tomas Kaberle to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf.

Burke wouldn't give out any information about the potential trade but that "we're really looking at the player."

Schenn has become an 18-year-old stalwart on the Leaf defence, one of their best draft choices in years. Schenn is probably the only untouchable on the Leaf roster. Burke's reaction to the trade offer for Schenn . . .

"It was a short conversation," he said. "I asked him 'you want me to trade a Top 5 pick, someone who might eventually be able to play, for an 18-year-old who is playing 22-minutes a game right now?'"

When it comes to Tomas Kaberle, who has waived his no-trade contract so he could go to a number of teams, Burke believes dealing him will be difficult.

"It has to be a deal that blows my doors off and that hasn't happened," he said. "I think Tomas Kaberle is staying."

Kaberle is one of the Leafs who has a no-trade clause as does defenceman Pavel Kubina.

"No trade contracts are coach killers," Burke said. "I hate them. They suck."

Long suffering Leaf fans were a big topic of conversation with Burke. He repeatedly indicated that he had the best job in hockey but that job comes with a lot of pressure especially a time frame from rebuilding the team.

"You get people who stand behind a microphone and say the rebuilding job is a three-year or five year process, then they don't have to answer questions for three years or five years," he said. "I don't give a time frame. I want it to happen as soon as possible. There is some timing and luck involved. We have some cap space. It might be a shorter turnaround time than people think."

And could the the top pick be coming from Tampa? I'm guessing they would love Stamkos and Schenn. It wouldn't be the Islanders or Atlanta, obviously, and the Sens would want more of a puck moving guy. So Tampa I'd say.

I wonder what the trade was that Burke is evaluating a player for.

That mystery player better be a prospect or young player, otherwise I am seriously going to questionn the direction of this team. Burke's first deal should set the table for future deals, so I sincerely hope it is for youth or prospects.

No love for May Day?

Agreed though, I'm glad they're sitting on this one making it count. I've been really excited to see who the first prospect/young roster player coming our way is.

LOL, I should have clarified, burke's first big deal will set the table for future deals and the direction of this club going forward. Be it a long/short term rebuild or the standard JFJ retool.

Cap space makes signing someone like Hossa possible.

or it could mean two years of high drafting to get the core, and sign Ufa's and trades to fill the roster out while bringing in the draft picks and youth while competing. Basically get the core with high picks and fill the roster out with prospects while competing for the playoffs.

I don't know that the Red Wings would be going through hoops to sign a player with character questions.

He's talking about the mystery player in the article, not Marion Hossa.

I'm slightly concerned that the player being assessed is Ryan Whitney. Certainly not the type of player we need, not in the slightest.

My guess is a prospect, or part time player.

I'd think they'd have files on full timers.

Of course they wouldn't want a player who is currently feuding with Grabovski ... would they?

I doubt it'll be another defenceman...
I think this will probably be a minor deal for a 3rd or 4th line player that will start to bring more physical presence to the lineup

I wouldn't entirely be opposed to trading for a good young D expected to play on the top line. That kind of deal would very likely eliminate defense as a worry for the future and allow us to put the focus mostly on forwards and goal tending. Essentially eliminating a position certainly makes my time spent speculating easier

"you want me to trade a Top 5 pick, someone who might eventually be able to play, for an 18-year-old who is playing 22-minutes a game right now?'"

Nice to see an actual top NHL GM point out the lunacy of trading a prospect/pick for established talent. I hope more and more people on this site read this quote.

Schenn is still a prospect though. That changes the argument completely. There is a big difference between trading a Kaberle, who is likely to be on the downside of his career when we are ready to compete, and trading Schenn, a rookie NHLer no where near his potential, for picks/prospects.
