Lay off it. If you like to believe an unconfirmed source, fine. But let the rest of us be skeptical.

Wow, the Team 990 waterboy and gofer should have spoke up when the fill-in crud for a sick Mitch Melnick were going off on all this. Guess he was too busy making copies and answering the phones to say something

To be skeptical, one way or the other, is just normal for mature and balanced people. How to display your skepticism, tends to show how mature and balanced you are...

Can we really affirm that the press surrounding the Habs is mature and balanced...or must we continue to be skeptical about it?

I dunno, but sure seems like kindergarden to me...no wonder we need a BoB in the front office...

I really can't stand Bob Gainey right now. Him of all people should know to deal with things in Montreal in private. This **** storm is to be expected when a move like this is made there, and its overall effect can't be positive.

good read. I also can't believe TSN picked up this story with an unconfirmed russian source. didn't we learn anything from this exact same situation 2 seasons ago?

Seems Engels is not the only one to think that the media is one of the reasons why the Habs have so many problems (eg: getting big name UFAs)

BG did the right thing IMO. Of course telling your star player to stay home will cause controversy. What did you expect? At least it lit a fire under the players yesterday and we'll see if it can continue. If there are Morons in the media that publish BS, that's not Gaineys fault, he told the media why he sent Kovalev home. It's hard to keep things like Kovy staying home without an injury private.

Marc DeFoy has been covering the Habs for 30 years.
Who is Eric Engels, by the way?

I didn't know people from the staff of Ruefrontenac posted here on the board.

So you know, none of you are welcomed.

Out of the two people you mentioned, Engels is the one that didn't publicly embarrass himself and his colleagues yesterday. DeFoy violated fundamental rules of journalism yesterday. His shoddy reporting spread like wildfire, until Dreger actually decided to verify the information with the primary source (Kovalev) in the situation and established it was untrue.

what the hell is wrong with a guy writing an opinion ? Should he patiently sit around until 2039 for validity. I love it now. A guy writes some crap on a blog, then someone, always goes, 'who is he anyways' Often they add, 'and why should I care'

There are issues in what is fair to print. If guys on the team are running wild, it's hard for a journalist to gauge degree, you need repeated access.

If a guy runs a story about something said, usually a concrete source should be lined up. There were valid questions about how Defoy's info came to be.

This is a guy , Engels, who is trying to make it in the hockey media and is running opinion pieces where he can. What the f is the matter with that ?

It's not worth it mcphee. I bet most of them didn't even bother clicking the link before bashing it.

I'm a bit torn about this issue.. Who was right? Defoy or TSN? How about both ?

I find quoting an "undisclosed russian friend", without any double check, to be unprofessional. However, the person I respect the most in the hockey world, Pat Burns, confirmed today that this Marc DeFoy is a respectable source, which confuses me even more.

My take - Kovy did say something like this to some friend, just like he answered the Russian journalist two years ago. But he never intended this to become public. Then the "friend" tried to make some money and sold the info, maybe even added some of his own. Then Kovy had to do an official denial on TSN.

So - is Kovalev responsible for what he talks about with friends around a glass of Stolychnaia ? Should the journalist verify the info before trying to make a scoop out of it ? Kinda confusing.
