Should we get a goaltender at the trade deadline?

Back to hockey.

The trade deadline is dangerously close, so there is no more time to wait and see. Carey Price has not been consistent in 2009 and Halak was certainly not stellar, with Colorado being the lone exception. Yes, defense has been bad, but our goaltending is very weak right now no matter what. Price did have a much better game against Washington, but there won't be an opportunity to get outside help in march or april.

I think something needs to be done quick to help our goaltending duo. My first step would be to call up Marc Denis and give him some starts, hoping for the best. If he does not provide better goaltending, then look for a veteran goaltender on the market, who could come in and help for the last stretch.

What do you think should be the Canadiens approach now?

We should get Manny Legace off waivers until Smokey shows us that he is indeed an NHL calibre goalie .

No. I'd be playing Halak right now, but stick with the duo we have.

if the oilers become sellers, Rollie will be available. he has been outstanding this year, our 2nd best player next to Hemsky. He shouldn' get 60 starts a year but he is excellent as part of a tandem or playing 45-50 games.

Him plus Moreau or Cole would be available for one of your goalies and ??

Might be a deal that helps both teams

I think at this point we have to. Price has completely forgotten how to stop the puck.

I wouldn't mind getting a vet to second Price.

If you can trade Halak in a package for something that can help the team, then yes, pick up a vet in another transaction.

Sending Halak to the minors and giving up an asset to get a veteran goalie, though, is a band-aid solution. This team should be looking at the long-term at this trade deadline, not at what can 'put them over the top.'

No real names come to mind as to who would be an affordable fit.

The only name(s) I like who wouldn't break the bank would be one of the Atlanta goalies, Lehtonen or Hedberg.

Giguere is on contract for multiple years at $6 million per, Khabibulin is too expensive, Tellqvist sucks, as does Raycroft. Roloson is too expensive.

No great options, unless you get rid of Halak + others for salary matching.

Bu to answer the question............ yes I believe we need a veteran goalie BADLY.

What a mess !

Anyway, let's try to get a good vet like Legace. He should not cost that much.

They are burning Price - and he is not helping himself too.

I was against the fact that he started in the NHL last year. And I was against the fact that they traded Huet last Spring. But it seems that the Tampa bay Purse/cell phone saga is the reason why he was traded away. the guys did not learn from that I guess.

I agree we need a older goalie bigtime! Huettttttttttt
we have to trade Halak for a center to put Denis as backup?
its just a matter of time for price to be back on top...
at this point id like to see Halak\Kovy\Higgins out for a big center...

I like that idea, Roloson for Halak and someone if salary is an issue. Roloson is 3.667 so he might fit the cap if Halak goes the other way. Or we could give you Dandenault for salary purposes.

I would take Cole too and suspend him right away for giving us so much trouble through the years.

our forwards lack of backchecking and our defenses penchant to pinch at the absolute worst times will leave any goalie hung out to dry. if the reasoning behind getting a vet is to help carey price's growth then i am all for it as long as halak is used as part of a package for the first line center we need. if we aren't packaging halak in a deal then i don't feel it is worth it.

actually, Dandenault + Halak for Rollie might work. We get a goalie for next year, you guys get one to sub for Price this year. We get a 5/6 dman (we are missing our #1 and #4 dman to injury), you guys get some cap space.

Seems almost to rational to happen.

.

Where is the poll? I am curious to find out how we would vote for this sort of thing...

Excellent topic for discussion.

IMHO, ideally the Price/Halak duo is the way to go, but considering EVERYTHING, we need all the help can get...at this rate we can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

I love Price, but game in and game out he is left out to dry by our D and Forwards who do not help him out, on top of that he has been going through some bad form himself lately...

The Price of today is not the Price of yesterday...

I reeeeeeealllllllllllllly miss the Carey Price of before the All Star game...almost on par with Steve Mason of CBJ...sigh...

Je me souviens...

Don't see how it would hurt to bring in a guy like Legace for a 6th or 7th rounder.
