Rene Bourque Injury

From the Calgary Sun:

Bourque out indefinitely

ST. PAUL -- Rene Bourque's dream season won't likely include a 30-goal milestone.

Right now, the Flames forward is just hoping to be back in action sooner than later.

Bourque scored his 21st goal of the season last night in the club's 3-2 overtime win, but was knocked from the game in the second period with an ankle injury, assessed to be a high-ankle sprain.

"It's definitely disappointing," he said. "Hopefully, it's not too, too bad. I'll miss some time for sure, but I'll find out more (today)."

Bourque was wearing a protective boot and needed crutches when he left the arena. The initial assessment said it's not broken, just sprained. However, players have missed up to a couple of months with such an injury.

With the Injury to Langkow and now Bourque, our secondary scoring is getting very limited. Lombo will have to step up and be an effective 2nd line center, we will see who will step up and pick up the slack from these 2 fallen soldiers

A MRI today in Calgary will shed more light on the issue.

Bourque tangled legs with Minnesota's Dan Fritsche and was on the ice unable to get to the bench when the Wild player raced to the other end and scored shorthanded.

Head coach Mike Keenan said Fritsche slew-footed Bourque on the play.

"Not only didn't he get a call on it, he got a shorthanded goal," Keenan said. "It was a disappointment, in terms of the officials just didn't see it. We watched it on tape, which is always easier than live action.

"He's got a very damaged ankle now. He's going to be gone for a long time."

Bourque didn't have much recollection of the play.

"I haven't seen it. I was battling for a puck and I thought he fell on me and I fell backwards because my leg got caught in a rut," he said.

The Flames were already without the services of Daymond Langkow, whose hand was injured after being hit with a puck Tuesday. Keenan said Langkow didn't suffer any broken bones.

Also on the shelf is enforcer Andre Roy, who hit his head on the ice during a fight Tuesday with Darcy Hordichuk. Roy didn't even go on the team for the trip to Minnesota and Edmonton.

Losing Bourque for a long time will be a big hit, more than expected when the club acquired him in the summer. He has as many goals as Jarome Iginla.

"He was playing really, really well and starting to come on very strong for us," Keenan said. "He's been getting better every night almost, it seems. His confidence has increased, and his play has commanded a lot of respect from his teammates and around the league.

"In my opinion, he should have been started to talk about to win the Selke Trophy. He doesn't play power play, has a tremendous plus-minus, 21 goals and you never hear of him."

Dam it, just damt it dam you Fritsche

Shouldn't Langkow be back fairly soon?

Either way, this BLOWS!

He was having such a good season too. Sutter needs to make a move IMO, Lombardi, Boyd, Nystrom, who ever, can't fill in for Bourque. He is such a huge part of this team.

This sucks.

It was a clear slew foot by Fritsche on the play, even if it was unintentional. The refs missed an easy call, although I'm not sure how they missed it since Fritsche and Bourque were battling for the puck.

I say bring up Lundmark or Greentree. Thye may not be the answer, but given what they both have done in Quad (based solely on stats) one of them should be given a shot. We have roughly 2 weeks to figure out if either can help the Flames out until Bourque is ready to come back or whether or not we need to make a trade.

Too bad both of their +/- are so terrible.....

Lundmark did look good though in the few games he played up although he's a center rather than a winger...

Greentree is at least a winger...

If Langkow and Bourque are both out, Sutter had better be calling Lundmark up.

Peter Maher is saying Bourque will miss 6-8 weeks, and Langkow 2-3 weeks.

I would like to see Greentree he's a big winger 6'3", his style I think would be more effective than Lundmark.

Hmm, I thought Langkow was day-to-day, wasn't that the initial report?

This sucks, who gets injured next?

I used to watch Greentree and Voros (NYR) play in the BCHL a long time ago. Those 2 were fun to watch playing together. Be nice to see Greentree up with the big club...

Man oh man, Borques energy and the play he infects on his line is just as, if not greater, great as his goals this season, this is truly a bad blow!!!

Huge blow for sure. Bourque has been one of the biggest reasons for the flames success this season. Just a hard working guy who was having a career year. Hopefully he can be back for the playoffs as it is guys like him that makes team successful in the postseason.

With Langkow out for a couple weeks as well it'll be interesting to see who gets the call up. Lundmark looked good earlier in the year. Greentree is having a great year with the baby flames and is more a goal scorer then Lundmark. Could even see Chucko or a guy like Van der Gulik get the call.

As per the Fan 960, the Flames have called up Lundmark.

Will Lundmark simply center the fourth line, or could he have a bigger role this time around and possibly even play on the second or third line?

He played on the second line the last time he was up so I assume that's where he'll be. Played well with Bertuzzi so maybe he is put on a line with him.
