Rumor-Lehtonen and DW talking new deal

Just thought I'd throw this out there to help squash some of the ridiculous trade rumors.

Quote:
Atlanta Thrashers (seller): Havelid, who will be unrestricted free agent this summer, will be one of the hottest defensemen in the market place. Center Marty Reasoner could also be moved, and possibly Eric Perrin. GM Don Waddell has also received calls about his goaltenders Kari Lehtonen and Ondrej Pavelec, but he's not likely to make any goalie moves at this time. This week, he will start to talk to Lehtonen's agent about a new contract
Kevin Allen always seems to have knowledge about whats going on with Thrashers. So much so that Ben mentions it in the Blueland Blog. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hocke...deadline_N.htm

Look for the report some time next week saying that the team is not close with a deal with Lehts and that it is DW's responsibility as GM to keep all options option for the long term health of the organization.

Or a sign and trade.

I remember how Marian Hossa negotiated a three year $18 million dollar deal with Ottawa--and then was traded to Atlanta the next day.

Unless there is a no trade clause, a new deal means little. If DW were to sign Lehtonen for a decent price, it would make Lehtonen MORE attractive for trade not less so.

Considering a playoff bound team is going to be unwilling to give up valuable roster players at the trade deadline, a trade deadline sign and trade makes little sense unless it is for a package of NHL ready prospects. What franchise has that to give up for a signed Lehtonen?

Sign and trade makes more sense in the offseason.

I don't see it happening. Kari obviously isn't performing, as you can see by our horrendous goals against. No, you can't blame the defense for it, as a great goalie should still be able to do well in terms of the goals scored against his team. Luongo played on terrible teams in Florida, and didn't do as badly as Kari is doing. I mean, come on...we've allowed more goals than the freaking Islanders.

Pavelec did his fair share to help bring that number up while he was in.

actually i find it quite easy to blame the defense. kari has a higher save % and faces a higher number of shots per game than most goalies in the league. he cant have 40 saves on 42 shots every single night. nobody can.

get him signed

His agent was asking for more than that last summer. Not sure why he would ask for less this time.

He counts towards the cap when he's injured. LTI list allows a team to go over the cap while that player is hurt. The Thrashers are never close enough to the cap max for this to matter.

I never heard any mention of any figures other than what he signed for. What's your source?

When has a player in Lehtonen's position ever signed for less than what he got the year before?

Has anyone said that?

Kari's current deal is for 1yr @ $3M.
The only numbers I saw in this thread were a 3-4 yr deal @ $3.5M per though that number may be closer to $4M for a few of those seasons.

If the Sens came sniffing around what would they need to offer? And let's say Vermette was the starting point. A tad more, a tad less?

Which could end up being in the top 5. You won't get that. Considering his injury history a team would be taking a huge risk. No gm would do that.

Rich Peverley has scored as many points in 14 less games. Explain to me why we need Vermette?
Our top 6 C production is not what it was a few months ago. You'll need to figure something else out.

I like what he has done. Can you honestly count on him producing on a consistent basis? Not yet.

Although Vermette seems to be consistent, his totals just aren't high enough. We're not interested.

All I know is that we HAVE to keep Lehtonen. Only way we trade him is if we get a goalie back in return. Trading Lehtonen for a forward and then trying for a goalie in FA is just too risky. The thought of being stuck with Pavelec and Hedberg all season long makes me cringe.

^ your 100% correct. unless we are getting a monster deal for him then we must keep him.

Hes not our problem so why trade him?
