Will Mark Recchi overtake Gordie Howe as career GP leader?

At the end of this season his career GP total will be little under 1500 games.

Gordie Howe racked up 1767 during his days, so Recchi needs 4 more seasons to get past Mr Hockey.

Can he do it?

For the sake of his legacy, I hope not.

I agree, he would probably need to play 5 more seasons before he surpassed Howe. I don't see it happening.

Well if you include both WHA and NHL regular season games it's 2186, and if you include playoff games from the NHL and WHA its 2,421

Edit: according to wikipedia

The lockout really hurt a lot of people's chances at this even though it may be in the middle of their careers and not the end like it was for Recchi. Patrick Marleau would've been the youngest player to pretty much every games played number if it wasn't for the lockout. He'd need 11 more seasons of full 82 hockey games to get to Gordie Howe now.

That would be cool though. Patrick Marleau plays until he's 41 all with the San Jose Sharks breaking this record. Too bad it'll never happen. lol

IMO, no one is ever going to play as long (or as well late in their career) as Howe.

Howe is/was more then a generational talent, he was a freak of nature. No one should be able to play hockey at that high of a level for that long EVER. The man is/was a one-of-kind player. There will never be another Gordie Howe.

OMG look at Brad Boyes' +/- this year! He's done!!

+/- is such a stupid stat.

Anyway, no, Recchi will likely play a year or two more then retire. He won't catch Howe. But if Chelios doesn't retire soon he might.

Didn't Chelios make the comment that he wouldn't break the record out of respect for Howe?

Oh, and as for Recchi, I'm really thinking he's not going to.

I believe he was talking about the age record, not the games-played record.

Nah. I think Recchi plays one more season and then calls it quits.

I hope Recchi is traded to a contender and then calls it quits.

Recchi lost nearly 120 games to lockout hockey too...

But no he won't do it, although he would get close if not for the lockouts.

No he won't. He said he's not going to stop playing in the NHL until someone pries his stick out of his cold dead hands.

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask if Chelios will pass Howe?
