Frolov

Purely hypothetical (no ****), what would it take for the Caps to get him?

Assuming he'd play right wing, he would be as good a compliment for Ovechkin or Semin down the road as one can imagine. Pretty fast, has good vision, can be a playmaker and a scorer, and most importantly, has excellent puck possession skills (top 10 in the NHL imo), which seems to be an absolute necessity for Ovechkin's or Semin's lines to work well. I mean, Kozlov is an average point getter and his only real intangibles are puck possession and boardwork, and he makes for the best linemate to Ovechkin out of anyone on the Caps. Frolov plays a similar style but has a much higher ceiling.

So, what would it take that wouldn't involve gutting the Caps. Fleischmann, Osala, 1st?

Team of Russians = success? That's an odd way of managing a team.

To answer your question, Frolov is a staple in LA and can only be had by overpayment. So no, Something more than Fleischmann, Osala, and a first would have to go the other way. Think Semin.

In order to land Frolov Washington would have to part ways with
Eric Fehr
John Carlson
2rd Round pick
..if the Frolov is on the block

Detroit and the Russian 5 say hello.

I think I outlined why he would be a good fit for the Capitals. Additionally, Russians generally have good chemistry.

Fleischmann, Osala and a 1st isn't an overpayment? That's potentially 3 top 6 guys right there.

Though I guess I could see where you're coming from.

And the reason LA needs another defenseman is...

Also, Fleischmann ~ Fehr, and Osala + 1st ~ Carlson + 2nd, maybe a little less. It's pretty even.

I wouldn't mind substituting Fleischmann for Fehr.

I don't think we're very good trading partners on this front, but you got it just about right when you said Fleischmann, Osala, and a 1st.

Detroit has 1 Russian player on their roster...

LA has no wish to get rid of Frolov, hence the overpayment.

They were doing pretty well back when the Russian 5 was playing. And right now they have half of Sweden there.

Having a bunch of players from the same country that compliment each other well and have chemistry isn't something to run away from.

Why would the Kings trade their best offensive player for that package?

The team is trying to get better, not worse.

Was pretty obvious when he said the Russian 5 he wasn't referring to the present day Wings roster.

Kings don't need picks and prospects. Kings need good veteran players. Trading frolov for anything that doesn't make the kings a better team now (so a forward better than frolov to fill the hole that trading frolov creates) is counter productive. Hence how trading Frolov makes no sense.

He's referring to the following Wings team

They had Fedorov, Larinov, Slava Kozlov, Fetisov, Vlad the Impaler

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000341997.html

It wasn't odd to see them deployed as a 5 man unit and watch them dominate the opposition. They had everything in terms of what you would want a 5 man unit to have. Skill, Speed, Physicality, leadership, chemistry and a great understanding of what each player did well and the ability to maximize that.

That was a sick group.
