OFFICIAL: Avery assigned to Hartford

http://rangers.lohudblogs.com/2009/0...hartford-sean/

Quote:
He will clear waivers by noon Eastern time, and will be assigned to Hartford of the AHL, the Rangers’ affiliate, and soon, if not immediately be put on re-entry waivers. That’s when the Rangers will almost surely claim Sean Avery, unless somebody beneath them in the standings does it first.
This guy is the Rangers beat writer. It's pretty much confirmed.

I know he's a prickk, but I was really hoping it would work. The guy can play some hockey. I guess the Ott/Avery 'most hated pair in the history of hockey' thing will never happen. And as much as I wanted it to work, I always figured the Stars were just too vanilla for it to happen. Ah well, at least I'll always have my #16 shirt to prove he was here, and that I am as well, an A-hole..

For someone who knows more than me, what will we be paying him after the re-entry waiver thing happens?

Best case, realistic, scenario.

Cost less overall than a buyout, and he's off the books in 3 years.

Best case scenario would be a team trading a pick/prospect (no matter how crappy) or a player with an expiring contract in 2009. If that happened though, the GM, of whatever team does it, should be fired on the spot and taken to a psych ward.

The next 3 years = $1.925 cap hit

The next 3 year = $2 million cash

A buyout would have cost $8 million > The re-entry waivers cost $6 million

I think we end up paying half his salary for the next 3 years... 6 million in all if I'm correct.

Better than a 4 million cap hit, I guess.

I know the Rangers need something, but frankly Avery is the answer? Obviously I couldn't be more happy to see us get rid of the guy without giving up young talent, or taking a crappy contract back in return. But when the Rangers realize Avery is not their savior NO TAKESIE BACKSIES! He is yours!

This also frees some cap space up for the trade deadline if we so choose to go after some players.

No much and it's not needed anyway with Morrow and Zubov on LTIR for the rest of the year.

His cap space is a small fringe benefit for this year. Next year it will be a big help though.

you guys do realize the second he's NYR property (when they claim him on re-entry waivers) this guy is going to turn around and trash talk Dallas, like he did to the Rangers when he first signed here.

I just hope our boys can stay classy and not get involved (Modano keep your mouth shut )

But they said he was reformed, a nice version of Mr. Avery. You mean to tell me he isn't?

It frees up enough to make a run at some guy if we so choose to.

Who cares what he says. If he trashes Dallas all it does is show he hasn't "reformed" at all and he's still the bag of ****** he's always been. He's NY's problem now.

I'm sure management has also told the team to keep tight lips on this if Sean does choose to say anything.

I don't doubt it but wouldn't that be like he didn't change at all?
He was supposed to go through classes to change and show he was a better person for it.

I couldn't care less what he thinks of the organization, the players, the city, or the fans. **** him.

I don't know that the Rangers are looking to Avery to solve all their problems, but moreso they think they are getting Avery for a bargain price. Now they're price operating under the assumption that they can keep him under control and that he'll regain the form that he had in his peak years. If these things come true, then it's a solid move. If not, well, then things will continue to get worse and I could see them buying him out eventually.

Yes if that guy has a cap hit of $13.3 million (Zubov+Morrow+Avery).

Instead of getting into the pro-rated crap, all that is important to know is that while Zubov ($5.35 million and gone for the year) and Morrow ($4.1 million and gone until at least the playoffs) are on LTIR, Dallas can replace them with a player/players of equal cap hit.

Therefore, Dallas can safely add a $5.35 player for the rest of the year, and it is highly unlikely for Morrow to play before the playoffs so his $4.1 cap hit is pretty safe to assume as well.

Unless Dallas is planning on adding $10 million in cap hits, Avery's going on re-entry's is pretty insignificant in regard to the cap this year.

I wonder how that would impact the Dallas Stars.

Since the creation of buyouts, I don't recall a player getting claimed on re-entry and then bought out.

Would Dallas still carry the $1.925 million cap hit for 3 years, or would they be responsible for half is buyout for the next 4 - 6 years depending on when the buyout occurred?

Let him.

He's made a fool of himself already. One more time won't hurt.
