Thanks to the Globe & Mail ... I forgot this coach too!
NOTES The Toronto Maple Leafs lead the league in killing coaches. There have been six midseason coach firings in the NHL this year, and on three occasions a team has sacked its coach the day after being beaten by the Leafs. On Nov. 2, the Carolina Hurricanes installed Paul Maurice after firing Peter Laviolette. On Feb. 15, the Pittsburgh Penguins let go Michel Therrien and replaced him with Dan Bylsma. The New York Rangers disposed of Tom Renney in favour of John Tortorella yesterday. … The Leafs' annual outdoor practice appears to land on a frigid wintry day each year. Today, when they skate at a rink in High Park, will be no exception. The forecast has temperatures as chilly as -11, plus the wind chill, but the sun is expected to shine.
Renney isn't at fault here. Glen Sather lost touch with reality and thought signing Redden, Drury, Gomez and Naslund would automatically make his team a Cup contender. All he did was cause future Cap issues. When will GM's learn??? Darcy takes so much heat but he is clearly one of the wiser GM's in the league.
