nice piece on johnny mitchell

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=4...id=DL|NHL|Home

nothing amazingly breakthrough but nice to hear that one player wants to stay and help bring the cup back, good old candian boy. gotta say mitchell is one of my favorite players and i hope the rumours of him being one of burkes untouchables are true.

Great read, I'm really rooting for this kid, and I see Burke doing the same.

Kid needs some more ice-time, he's been really good lately.

I don't think Stajan, Grabo, and Moore will all make it past the deadline, hopefully Mitchell can fill that role for the rest of the year and into next season.

personally, I'd be alright with a 2,3,4 of Stajan, Mitchell and Grabovski... just need a bonafide number one.

Yeah i agree... I'm not really liking Grabovski... if he was younger I would still give him a chance.. but at 24 you have to wonder if there was a reason why he hadn't made it to the NHL prior.. I do like Mitchell a lot too, hits good pass, nice shot and he won the fastest skater at the leafs skill competition too didn't he? He's a keeper for sure..

i think mitchel and stajan good be the starting of a really good high-pressure line (3rd)...

i know they are both middle-men, however both lack the true scoring potential needed in a top 6, but they are quick, big enough, and reasonably smart hockey players... add in someone like clarkson/moen etc for speed + sandpaper and we have a good 3rd line

mitchel is the shot + speed, but big enough to hit
stajan is the well-rounded player
moen is ths hitting and grit

together thats a good 3rd line.

above that we could have a potentially-extremely talented 2nd line of Kully-Grabo-Tlusty
... now we just need that first line... (if we get MSP he fits with grabo + kully... speed factor)

JT??? where are you????
duchene? Schenn? Kassian?

actually.... i've been thinking about the character of the team, and MSP might fit right in with the direction our forward group is going = crazy speed... someone like panik/tatar (i know, i'm a tatar fanboy) would be an obvious linemate

MSP-Tatar-Tlusty
Kully-Grabo-Hagman
Mitchell-Stajan-Moen
may-p1-p2
seems like a good start. (blake/moore have no place on my team)

So Stajan is a 2nd line center and Grabovski is a third line center?

One of Stajan or Grabovski will be eventually traded.

at Burke building a team with his entire top 6 europeans. He might say that he has no preference between a Canadian, American or Euro but I can almost gurantee you will never see his ENTIRE top 6 forwards all european. Plus There is basically no grit and very limited size on those top 2 lines. Tatar will also never be a #1 center in the NHL. Has there ever been a team that had both there top 2 centers under 5'10/5'9?

I don't understand the logic here. Grabovski played over a quarter of the season (24 games) in the NHL last year as a 23/24 year old (he's actually 25 now - his birthday was Jan 31).

Mitchell is 24 now (Jan 22). How does it make sense that "you have to wonder" about Grab playing 24 NHL games as a 23/24 year old and an almost-full season (missed a few games) as a 24/25 year old... yet you think Mitchell is a keeper playing his first full season as a 23/24 year old?

I do like Mitchell, I think he's improved quite a bit and he's a more complete player than Grab. I just don't understand the reasoning.

I don't see the problem with having three solid centers in the line up. Mitchell should remain here as a third or fourth line center on a good competetive team...

Grabovski is not a 3rd line center and doesnt fit Burkes idea of what his bottom 6 gives you.

I love Johnny Mitchell. this guy is a player. great size, great speed, very soft hands and a high work ethic. this guy does it all, he is homegrown Leaf product as well. He has been given nothing and earned everything right from camp.

God I love this kid!! He is a big part of this rebuild, he's going nowhere.

Very impressed with his play. Great article too.

Except, at the very end, the journalistic standard just plummeted after a very well written article:

Quote:
He still suffers from rookie-itus, a disease that causes young players to cough up pucks in bad areas of the ice and, in general, just make some stupid plays.

For a 3rd/4th liner, Mitchell doesn't play aggressive enough for me. I really liked him early in the year against Ottawa, where he really was throwing his body around. He just doesn't do it enough though.

I'm hoping Stajan can emerge into a good 2nd line center. His 2-way game and leadership will be great for a playoff run when we become contenders.

Why do posters continually point to him as a leader on the Leafs? Luke Schenn has had to step in for him on many occasions, and none of Burke/Wilson/Fletcher have even considered giving him a letter. Actually Wilson has benched him, and a few weeks ago questioned his play. Stajan should be traded while his value is high.

i think the leafs should try to trade grabo for rob schremp. if he can start to hit a bit more we will have some more grit to the team as well a great play maker.

but i don't know if edmonon will trade that i think the leafs would have to give up a bit more then grabo.
