Nash is a UFA after 2010. By then guys like Stempniak and Toakala will be off the books at the very least.

I don't expect us to get either Nash or Backstrom.

technically they are just under 7...right now they are at 9 mil because van ryn is placed on injury reserve.

here are the players that come off in the next two years:

next year: hollweg, antropov, cujo, moore- (if they are not resigned or moved)
2010: stempniak, poni, kubina, mayers, stajan, van ryn, frogren, toskala (if they are not resigned or moved)

leafs have a lot of room to play with in the future.

2009 notable free agents: bouwmeester, beauchemin, pahlsson, cammalleri, hossa, backstrom, gaborik, komisarek, sedins
2010 notable free agents: nash, kovalchuk, savard, jokinen, marleau, nabokov, luongo

Bye bye Antropov, and Kubina soon, I hope. Then you'll have around $17m free. Don't go on a FA buying spree, please. Bring in some more good young kids and a couple solid, old mentor guys. Then sign the budding stars to long term deals! Then later bring in one or two good FA's to make a run, like 2011...

So when you look at the standings and teams who are desperate to make something happen at the deadline - Teams like Montreal, NYR, and Philly are in tough with cap issues.

How much do you think it would be worth to them if it's noon on the 4th, and the only way they can add that player they want is to dump a $2mil / $3mil contract?

I think we could at least get a 2nd out of it if it's a last minute thing...

while i can see why people want nash... what makes people think he is going to sign with the leafs? even if he goes to july 1, why would want to sign with a rebuilding team after spending his career with the blue jackets? i just can't see that happening... mind you i think he is going to sign an extension pretty quickly this summer with columbus

Alot about a guy who has potential that is yet to be tapped, and of course a lot better than goalie of an excuse that we called the Razor. I wonder how brilliantly he is playing at colorado right now....

Top free agents don't come to Toronto.

Even if they did, MLSE has probably told Burke to keep most of that space in the mid term, since a significant drop in the cap is expected for the 10/11 season. There is also a distinct possibility the cap could drop as soon as next season, IMO. The Leafs can afford to take on salary for next season, but I doubt we'll see them do it beyond that.

Leafs should take all the garbage over paid players who teams want to get rid of with 1 or 2 more years left on their deal in exchange for picks. Nylander plus a first for Boyd Devereux, may not be nylander but anyone who wants rid of salary, call burkie and we will pay him for a pick

If the Leafs want goaltending that bad, they better go after proven talent and not trade for potential. The last two trades they have done for goaltenders were for potential and neither have panned out.

They had better be looking at signing someone and not looking for a prospect to hang their hopes on.

I don't know why everyone is so hyped about getting Nash as a free agent. Columbus is a much better team than we are now and in the next few seasons. So i don't see him leaving a great young team like Columbus just to come here because he is from the Toronto area. I honestly believe Nash will play his whole career with Columbus.

Exactly what I think every time someone mentions Nash. Columbus is on the right track, and on the rise, and they'd be stupid to let Nash walk. It also doesn't ever sound like he wants to leave. I think someone asked and he said that he grew up a Leafs fan, but he really likes it in Columbus.

Might as well sign Savard, Nash and Kovalchuk all in one fowl swoop.

Backstrom and J-Bo this summer.

Bazing.

Tbh, I don't see many substantial UFAs having any interest in coming to Toronto anymore

as said before i dont understand people that think plyares will walk out of good situations just because they were leafs fans as kids... Columbus will be good until all of the young players are out of their entry level deals, so Nash has a few years to win probably.. and with mason you could argue they have a chance to win every night
