Create an all-HFBoards maligned team

A while ago, I had a thread for an "all-time Slapshot team."

This time, I am asking you to create a team consisting of a starting five and a goalie that are met with more negativism than positivity on here.

Basing on ATD's...

Turgeon would center Drillon.

Cheevers would be starters. Man, so many people saying he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall.

The thing is, a Turgeon - Drillon line with Cheevers in the playoffs would manage to win lots of games.

If it's an NHL-board team, the Sedins would be on there somewhere. Right there with Marc Savard.

Nice find with Gillies. Can't say that I really agree for Osgood, though.

Now that I think about it, Jose would've been a better choice for goalie.

No mention of a certain #6, Thornton? I'm surprised.

The guy who I find are always talked about in terms of their shortcomings as opposed to their highlights.

Krutov - Dionne - Turgeon
Housley - ????
Joseph

I'm not sure there's another defender who comes close to these other guys.

How about Craig Janney. He's not talked about often, but when he is it's usually in a negative light.

Bryan McCabe is another guy who doesn't tend to get any positive attention.

Janney actually gets a fair amount of support round here.

Coffey?

Not as maligned as Housley.

Tony Esposito might be a good choice for goalie, at least in the history section.

It's tempting to not look at other posters' ideas but I'll give this a shot. this is from an HOH section standpoint.

goal - Curtis Joseph. Always on the wrong end of "should he be in the hall?" discussions

defense - housley. No explanation required.
defense - coffey, I guess. Defensive liability exaggerated.

forward - turgeon. classic case of empty points hog.
forward - bertuzzi. a criminal and a distraction.
forward - duff. undeserving hall of famer.

if it was just all players on this entire board, you'd see names like Lalime, Cloutier, Denis, McCabe, Berg, Belak, Avery, Comrie, Redden, and Emery.

Ah, yes. How could I forget the man dubbed "Softy Janney?"

The first names that came to mind were Turgeon and Dionne. Then I realized, that Coffey probably fits the mold, but since I'm the president of the anti-Coffey club, I can't really put him on this team.

Turgeon, however, is the guy that strikes home for me. Mostly because of my ATD team in ATD 7 (I think). It was my last team that I made solo before teaming up with Arrbez in the MLD and then GBC in all of the following drafts. My lines were as follows:

Toe Blake - Elmer Lach - Maurice Richard
Paul Kariya - Pierre Turgeon - Reggie Leach
Herbie Lewis - Kirk Muller- Blair Russel
Eddie Shack - Derek Sanderson - Mario Tremblay

To this day I think I had one of the best crop of forwards in the draft. Plus I had a kick ass defense unit anchored by Sprague Cleghorn and J.C. Tremblay along with Leo Boivin and Terry Harper. I had the best first line in the draft and one of the best fourth lines. My third line was more than capable as a two way line.

My team lost in the second round and the big reason was the second line. However, Kariya had been the LW on the top line of the previous ATD champion Montreal Canadiens alongside Adam Oates and Gordie Howe so clearly he wasn't the problem. Reggie Leach has been on teams that have gone far, and people were citing him as the best player on that line. It was simply the fact that Pierre Turgeon was on the team that turned people off. I was even at one point accused of not having secondary scoring past the punch line. If I had ANYTHING, it was secondary scoring.

Now, I'm not the biggest of Turgeon fans, but I think that he's probably the guy that takes the most guff around these parts. He could play hockey. But from the way people around here react to his name, he might as well have been a crack addicted rapist.

"Maligned" implies that the statements about a player are "untrue" or "Misleading" or are "Misrepresenting" towards the player.

I assure you, my statements about Housley are bang on from my point of view, and he deserves his 4th forward soft as a baby's bottom rep.

Really? I guess you can totally ignore my post then. I thought maligned just meant criticized, correctly or not. I didn't realize it had anything to do with incorrect, inaccurate, or misleading statements.

Well, in the Original post, Bundy states that he is looking for players who are often met with more negativity than positive thinking, so he may have just meant something different than his post title.

But Maligned does mean:

Quote:
to utter injuriously misleading or false reports about : speak evil of

malign suggests specific and often subtle misrepresentation but may not always imply deliberate lying

To make evil, harmful, and often untrue statements about; speak evil of.

etc

I had to sit through a couple of Housely years in DC, and I am right there with you. If anyone ever tries to argue that Housely was anything more than a glorified PP specialist, just PM me, and I'll unleash a massive rant about how god-awfully horrible he was in his own end.

Esposito was the first name that came to my head thinking about the goaltending spot for this team.

I would almost say Francis at center but it would depend on who you are talking to on that one. Turgeon is a great pick there.

McCabe would be one of the 2 d-men if this is regards to the NHL talk board. If you listen to some of them over the past 2 years you would think he doesn't even belong in the league.

Coffey would be my other one there.

not sure on the wings... possibly Kariya and MAYBE Joey Mullen?

Since I've defended him a few times in similar threads, I think I will put up Ulf Samuelsson for this one as well. Not only was he one of the best and more under-appreciated defensive defenseman of his time (better than Adam Foote and Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr and all the others that people seem to love so much today) and a key player on multiple Stanley Cup champions, but he cements his position on this team due to the fact that even today, there are knowledgeable, usually level-headed and objective posters here who simply cannot discuss Samuelsson's play without resorting to pettiness and insults, all because once upon a time he injured a player lots of people get their jollies off to.
