As many people have pointed out, trading Kaberle for Edler is virtually a wash from a Vancouver perspective. Kaberle would an amazing addition to the Canucks and immediately beef up their off-again on-again powerplay, but he isn’t that much of an improvement over Edler when you consider age, contract and defensive play. I honestly would not trade Edler for Kaberle straight up. No offense to Kaberle, I just think Edler is a great asset to have.
Antropov for Schneider is pretty fair value-wise. I just don’t think Schneider will be traded prior to the Luongo situation being resolved.
That leaves Pogge and Stajan for Grabner and a 1st round pick in 2009. I think Grabner, at this point in time, has a much better chance of turning into a legitimate top-six player than Pogge does of turning into a starting goalie. They’re both prospects so anything can happen, but if I had to put money on it, I would definitely bet on Grabner. As for Stajan, I just don’t think he’s worth a first round pick in 2009…maybe I’m undervaluing him, but that’s my opinion.
Basically the deal gets worse because in addition to trading away three of their most talented youngsters, Vancouver also sacrifices their ability to draft replacement prospects when they trade away their 1st round pick in 2009. In return, they get Pogge, who really isn’t looking good right now, and Stajan, who doesn’t particularly fill a need in Vancouver.
I agree that the chances of a Tor-Van deal going down are slim to none.
