He said minimum, 1st rd. pick + top prospect + roster player.

The value that the Leafs board has been echoing all along.

Much respect to Kaberle, he's a solid D, but he's no Pronger.

I'd agree he is worth that.

So we either get to see a fanbase bent over crying from being ***** by Burke, or we keep Kaberle.

Im fine with either option, though it would be funny to be able to post a "Theres no way MY gm pays that much, hes too smart" quote to laugh at.

Good luck with that Mr.Burke.

He should be happy though. He's said that he wanted to keep Kaberle all along. Now it looks like he should be happy that Kaberle is staying...

They're 2 different players that fill 2 different roles.
If a team needs a big body to move forwards out from in front of their net then they give that to get pronger.
If a team needs a puck moving d-man to accelerate their offense then they offer that to get Kaberle.
Both players excel at what they do which is why their value is similiar to whichever respected team needs their services.

To get Pronger, Burke gave the Edmonton Oilers Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, two first-round picks and a second-round pick.
Pronger > Kaberle

Just to be clear, Burke did not say that he wanted the same return as he gave up for Pronger. He gave the equivalent of four 1st round picks for Pronger, one of them being conditional (the condition was met). This isn't on that level. His point was that he wants a big return, like anybody trading a top defenceman.

Edit: Post above beat me to it.

He said similar package, not necessarily the same. On one hand, Kaberle's remaining 2+ years with a 4.25 mil cap hit is a pretty good bargain. On the other hand, Pronger was acquired with four years remaining.

Quote:
"It would be a minimum of a first-round pick, a guy that can play on our team right now and a top prospect," said Burke in a conference call with reporters.
"A guy that can play on our team right now" might not necessarily mean another 23 year old Joffrey Lupul either.

Not entirely unexpected. Just renting Brian Campbell cost San Jose a "guy who can play on our team right now" in Steve Bernier and a first. Being that Kaberle has two more years at a very reasonable rate would justify "a top prospect" being added in (depending on one's definition of top prospect, ie Ladislav Smid circa 2006).

Imo, there is insinuations here that Kaberle=Pronger. Jeez I'm aware they're not equal and that's not what he meant, notice the emoticon in my first post.

I would trade Bobby Sanguinetti, 1st round pick, and a roster player for Kabs. Don't know what roster player. Would prefer to trade a defender like a Girardi, mainly since we need scoring help and can't really afford to trade a forward.

Would you quit comparing the two. Once again their 2 different players that fill 2 different roles.

Why does it seem like all Leafs fans want Kaberle gone? Hes under contract for another two years. Your best offence Defensmen they have. I never could under stand all these Kaberle trade offers. Yes I know the Leafs are in re-build mode, but still hes under contract for 2 more years.

Exactly. Methinks both Burke and Martin are setting the bar a tad high, we'll see but imo these are unrealistic expectations.

Actually, Pronger does both. He gets people out from the front of the net and he makes a nice first pass (or at least he did, don't know if he still does) out of his zone. He's got a big shot too.
