Byers. I thought Owens was a Hartford--not a Ranger contract. Anyway he seems to be a good player. Add Soryal.

To be blunt--not too many here seem to like larger framed physical players. Not comparing Byers to say like Adam Graves as a player but the style of game is similar. A guy who works the boards and corners, drops the gloves from time to time--goes hard to the net and fights to stay there--his numbers for his two full AHL seasons are pretty good including shooting %--kind of tells me he has good hands in close to the net. 7 pts. in 9 games this year before his season ending injury. He's not the slouch that some make him out to be. Now I don't expect a guy like him to be bringing the puck up the ice--did Graves do a lot of that?--but he provides a physical component with some skill and quite a bit of aggression. To be honest I think we have enough little guys with puck and passing skills and not enough guys like Byers or Dupont--end of rant.

but honestly nich, looking 4-5 years from now a lot of names may have changed but we may have the same kind of team that we do today. Those early 90's teams were loaded with skill but also bigger and nastier and had lots of muckers, grinders and fighters.

Even if a Byers just turns into a Kris King (kind of an Arron Asham of his day) which isn't a reach at all--it's not a bad thing.

Hagelin. Add Baranka.

(Guys, if you put Kveton up there, you should be thinking a lot more seriously about Baranka in the oil-money-drying-up KHL.)

Byers got a nasty side to his game that I really like. He is in your face so to speak. He got okey goalscoring touch and his overall skill game isn't bad.

But he needs to become faster. His skating is "fine"; but a player like him needs to be really fast to make it to the NHL.

He could definitly improve his skating, but his injury won't help (he blew his knee right?)...

That is the crtiique Ola--that he needed a half step more and the knee injury isn't going to help. Even so he is closer to the NHL than any of the others on the list now.

And again even so when we look at players and say this one's a better skater, a better passer, a better puck carrier--it doesn't always mean he becomes a better player and the game is not just skating, passing and puckhandling at least not the North American game with the smaller rinks. There's only so many smaller guys a team can handle who can skate, pass and stickhandle--teams need to mix in bigger guys who can give and take hits, scrum for pucks, create havoc in front of the other teams net, get the dirty goal and when looking at the current Ranger team that's one obvious thing that's missing. In respect to Byers skating it's not like he's Colton Orr either (not to pick on Orr necessarily he's improved quite a bit) and at the same time right now we have Mike Sauer recovering from the same kind of injury less than a year ago and many here advocating for him to be called up. Byers time in the AHL has not been a disappointment. I think he's actually exceeded expectations putting up numbers.

Taking a look at the #10 winner Kveton--he's not exactly without things to wonder about. Another non physical player playing on a larger rink. One who kind of quit on his QMJHL team the one season he was in North America. It does not mean he will not make it as an NHL player but we could also ask ourselves what kind of a player he's going to be? if he does make it--and if his top upside is just another Gomez to complain about 4 years from now because the makeup of that team is the same as the current one now--then where's the progress?
