I do not mind VAndedrmeer but am not a fan of the contract does not mean I cry endlessly when Sutter seems to like Bubba and I don't It was an interesting interview though
What is so bad about Vandermeer's contract?... he is close to entering his prime... he has a few years of full-time NHL duty under his belt... he is a team player through and through... Phaneuf always seems to play better when they are paired together... he provides a physical presence... is not bad with the puck... is pretty reliable in his own end... not afraid to get in shooting lanes and block shots...
and defensmeman market is the highest its ever been... sure Vandermeer got 2.3 million... I never saw anyone whining when Warrener got 2.35 million per year for the exact same role... the only difference being Vandermeer is younger and not as broken down...
when the likes of Foote (3.0), Finger (3.5), Sopel (2.333), Salvador (2.9) and Jason Smith (2.6) get what they do why are we complaining about Vandermeer?... people need to get over the contract and realize he makes our team better
So how does waivers work in the playoffs anyways? I know everyone hates Eriksson, but he'll be a good depth guy for the playoff run should we get into injury trouble. He has experience, is well liked and can play a solid 15 minutes if needed. Wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him as a black ace.
I think his injury this year has kind of twisted things for the worse for him. The bottom line is I really liked how he played in the playoffs last year... if he can repeat that great. As Cherry said about the Flames D last year they hit to hurt. Curious what happens at the deadline. I think it would be great if teh team could land a guy like Jay Bo UFA but I think SUtter will go after a goalie and a depth forward (Roberts?). Honestly though every prospect brought up from Quad City is great, fills the holes and not only that exceeds all expectations. That said I am thinking Sutter will do less than originally thought even with the injuries...
Eklund reports Montreal could get Guerin if they could move a top 6 forward to Calgary (Alexei Kovalev?).
Of course Sutter has been dealing on Jokinen for the last two years.
I also think we could have a shot at Derek Morris or Nick Boynton. Both are RH shots that could play in the top four as Phaneuf's partner. Bruce Garrioch also reported Niclas Havelid can be had for a 3rd round draft pick. I think he'd be a good addition as well for Phaneuf.
Sutter is willing to trade his draft picks. I would guess he is trying to move his 2009 1st rounder for a top 4 dman or top 6 forward.
Here is an AWESOME link to nhl.com that lists all the 2009 draft picks for each team and explains the picks that were moved.
1. The trade for Rene Bourque is for either Montreal's 2009 2nd rounder (Tanguay trade) or Calgary's 2010 2nd rounder. It is CALGARY's CHOICE, so Sutter could keep Montreal's pick this year in play at the deadline (send it back to Montreal for Kovalev?).
2. Los Angeles has a whopping 14 picks already in this year's draft.
Interesting article and some good quotes from Sutter. Seems to really like the chemistry with this team and unless something blows him away I don't think he'll be making any big trades. Still have to think he adds some depth especially with all the injury trouble in the last week, but other then that I'm expecting a quiet day for the flames.
Smyth isn't about to post better numbers then he is now (he's on pace for around 66 points) even if he went to Flames. He's still overpaid despite signing his contract two years ago. He'd handicap the team terribly for the rest of his contract.
Yeah not hot on Smyth's huge contract.... 5 years ago sure but the injuries are too often these days. Curious about all the Ollie Jokinen hype... not sure what to think of it but Keenan really digs him and vice versa
