Given this, why would they not take a flyer on this guy for free? If he is as good as everyone here is saying he is, they must have pretty inept management.
Penguins have no cap space. Columbus has eight defensemen already and would have to send one down through waivers to make room for Vaananen. Ditto for the Wild. Keep in mind that the roster limit is eliminated as of the trade deadline - the Canucks have extra roster spots because Nycholat and Hansen are hurt so they don't have to waive someone to fit Vaananen in. Other teams need to make room now to fit him in.

No one is saying he's a world beater. He's a quality 6/7 defenseman the Canucks just got for free.

Sure beats wasting a 3rd/4th round pick for a rental depth defenseman doesn't it? (see Dave Nonis for further clarification).

It also has to do with the type of game he plays. He is a physical shut down d-man, you're not going to him for 50 points a year. The Penguins already have Oprik AND Hal Gill (who Shero just loves), why would they risk another contract spot for a player that may not even fit into the rotation?

Minnesota is probably the only other team that could legitimately have a shot at him and passed on him, however, they already have Skoula, Weller, Foster and arguably Schultz, who play a smilar game, and there's no way he's bumping out KJ, MAB or Burns, so what's the point on getting another dman?

Columbus is technically ahead of us in the standings, though they had Commodore, Tollefsen and Methot as well.

So it's down to Vancouver who has SOB, followed by Davison and Nycholat. A border-line NHL player and a press-box player, so why not pick up Vaananen?

Other teams would be getting more of what they already had.

some quotes:

Quote:
“He’s a good guy, a really solid, defensive defenceman,” said Sami Salo. “He doesn’t back up off any physical play and he plays hard every game. I think he’ll fit pretty good in this locker room.

“I’ve played quite a few times with him [on the Finnish National team]. He’s an easy-going guy and I think he’s going to be a solid addition.”
Quote:
“Right now it’s just depth as far as defencemen,” said head coach Alain Vigneualt. "Ossi, we feel brings us good depth and there’s still quite a few days before the trading deadline, so we’ll see what happens.

“He’s a sixth or seventh defenceman on a good team. So he gives us depth in that area. He’s a big, stay-at-home type d-man.”

Interesting, it seems like Canucks are planning to move one of their current D.

Not too keen on his fighting record.

Out of the two fights he's been in, he's lost to Tyler Wright and Mark Recchi.

I'm happy with the pick up; however, it will take some getting used to when I see him in Canucks uniform.

Vaananen isn't a fighter/pugilist. He's a big guy who plays the body and isn't afraid of the physical game.

Good quotes from Salo...think maybe Gillis asked him about the move before making it? After Gillis' talk about not disrupting the flow of the locker room, I'd have to think so.

I'd like to see a D set of...

Ohlund-Edler
Bieksa-Mitchell
Salo-Vaananen

As I said before, I think Vaananen's defensive game could free Salo up to play his offensive game.

It certainly does, although it's not really a relevant comparison unless the opportunity presented itself that year, too. I mean, yeah, he's a good pickup, but unless Gillis went to Philly and beat their GM into putting him on waivers, he can only be patted on the back so much for it.

So? Fights aren't as big a part of the game down the stretch and in the playoffs.

Look for SOB to be dealt for a 3rd line depth forward...similar to the Matt Cooke deal last year, except it'll be defenseman for forward.

I think SOB and maybe Raymond are our biggest assets heading into the deadline. Would love to see a good 3rd line center type like Pahlsson or Peca brought in.(Peca I doubt moves given Columbus' big push for the playoffs, but if Anaheim continues to fall, Pahlsson could move).

That's a great core, and everyone can speak their mother tongue on the blue line!

I also see O'Brien being moved. I don't think his attitude is particularly popular.

I still can't believe anyone would complain about picking up an NHL-caliber defenseman for nothing. At worst, he doesn't work out and goes back on waivers. At best, he takes a roster spot and allows Gillis to deal another defenseman. Zero downside, just like aquiring Wellwood.

I would like to see this happen:

To Buffalo:
Shane O'Brien
Mason Raymond

To Vancouver:
Tim Connolly

I'm hoping we keep this defensive depth. Only trade SOB or another dman if we are getting one back.

No thanks. We might as well put a vegetable in some Nike-Bauers and see how that works out.

HA, I had a feeling if he managed to fall to us in the waiver draft Gillis might pick him up. You can never have enough depth on the blueline and I would think he'll be pushing O'Brien in terms of lineup slots.

Also another asset we get for free!! Yay!

Not saying it's a bad thing.

Clearly if he replaces anyone on the current roster it'll be Shane O'Brien, and SOB's greatest value is his toughness/fighting. I was looking to see if Vaananen had a hope of replacing SOB in that capacity.

I guess not.

Not that it's a bad thing. He more than makes up for it with hitting and shot blocking.

SOB...

I really like SOB - I think once he matures he can be a solid, tough dman. Kinda like a Gerald Diduck.

But I think this has got to spell the end of him here in Vancouver. Vaananen is a solid dman tho.

That is the downside to me with this pick up - if they do that. I think SOB brings an element to the table that no other d-man on the Canucks does.

To clarify - I was never complaining about the pickup - just musing that there may be a lot of flaws in this player we are unaware of......kind of like how everyone was all excited when we got Eric Wienrich and Keith Carney.

Except we gave up draft picks to acquire them. It's a lot easier to accept Vaananen's flaws when we gave up squat to get him.

Except the fact that the team payed for those players in draft picks while Vaananan is a waiver pick up only costing a roster spot. If he doesn't work out it doesn't cost the Canucks a pick. Thats what makes this pickup look good too a lot of us.
