Nashville and Toronto

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nas090228.html is reporting that Nashville is looking for a top six forward and has Ponikarovsky on their radar. Apparently Nashville is shopping Radek Bonk and Greg De Vris. I can't see Burke being incrediably interested in either of those players , but there was a rumor floating around before that Burke was interested in Tootoo.

Don't see a need for the Leafs to move Ponikarovsky. He is signed through next season to a very reasonable $2.1 Million cap hit and fills the roll of a top 9 winger very nicely.

Leafs would not want Bonk or de Vries.

Ponikarovsky's been on the radar of Nashville fans here on HF for a while. I think he'd be a good fit with them, especially at his price. A 2nd round pick or young defence prospect would be more than fair.

That's what they thought about Hollweg.

Bonk and DeVries are UFA rentals- not something Toronto would do. Ville Koistenen is available but not sure Burke would want him. I believe Tootoo wouldn't be traded by Poile except for massive overpayment because of the fan factor-- he doesn't exactly put butts in the seats but he probably is the most recognized/ well known player to the casual fan.

Tootoo's value to the market of this team is priceless. I'd almost put him in the untouchable category. He's that important to the fans.

There was rumors that Hamhuis was the block as well, apparently Toronto is looking for young d in return so any of the names mentioned make sense.

In all honesty, if Burke makes a deal with Nashville i hope he dials in on the Preds defense. Quality throughout.
At least a list of where Nashville's scouts rank the 09 defensemen.

Probably not, would be nice if we got a 3rd+Roman Josi (aka. Kaberle v2.0)

Depending on if and how many D-men the Leafs trade, Hamhuis would be a good addition.

A third? Kilger landed a third last deadline from Florida. You would be happy with a third round pick for a 20 goal scorer who costs 2 million a season. Aim a little higher.

I'd take that deal... Doubt we'd get it though. Josi is putting up very good numbers for a teenager in Bern.

I definitely see potential for Nashville and T.O to be trading partners.

Nashville has a LOT of picks and a LOT of youthful prospects to trade and they need a goal scorer. They are definatly compatable trade partners. If you want a goalie prospect Nashville can offer one; Lindback, Smith, Pickard. If you want a defenseman prospect they got one; Josi, Franson, Koistinen.

In the end I see Nashville making a move to get a scorer but it would have to have minimal damage to the main roster.

Personally, I think they would deal Franson before Josi. Maybe even for Poni straight up but hard to say. Hamhuis garners much more- can't see a Toronto deal around him.

Blum is off limits. On the list of d-men to ask for would be Laakso and Sulzer as well but personally I'd rather trade Franson.

leafs could really use pickard in the system, but i'm not sure if the preds would be willing to give him up for poni.

Dont know who else in the preds system burke would have an eye on, but he certainly wont take bonk (who should actually have value to playoff teams). I could see him taking on devries so the preds can save some money though.

If Bonk is on the trade block, Oilers better go hard for him! We need a 3rd line/faceoff guy.

Would the Preds really move Pickard less than a year after drafting him? As a Leafs fan, I'd be happy with Franson and maybe a 3rd for Poni.

I'd say no, he's Colin Wilson's BFF, and Smith and Lindback are in the system and tradeable. Jeremy Smith and Chet Pickard are going to sign contracts for next year leaving the depth chart for goalies looking like this

Rinne
Ellis

Dekanich/Pickard/Smith

Lindback in Europe.

Like I said, Nashville's depth at goal is reaching phenominal levels.

Is Ponikarovsky an impending UFA or is he under contract for an additional year? If he is still under contract, I am unsure why he is even being mentioned so frequently....

As for the offer, I would say the Predators would be more likely to include Laakso than Franson. They really like Cody here, especially the size. With this being his second year in the minors, I think they will try to hang on to him as he is close to being ready....

With that said, it makes plenty of sense for the Preds to move a defensive prospect for a forward....which prospect that is, is the question....Poile has paid some steep prices for players in recent years, but he has also made some very solid trades (Sillinger for Shishkanov comes to mind, as does Hlavach for a 7th last year).
