Ken Hitchcock was interviewed by Bill Watters and Darren Dreger on Toronto 640 today.
Darren Dreger: Big night last night for the Columbus Blue Jackets. What a great effort and an example of why some Western Conference teams really have no interest in playing the Blue Jackets in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They were down 2-0 to the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago. They fight back and they beat the Blackhawks winning in a shootout The Columbus Blue Jackets are headed to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Obviously, that is a portion of our big story today. Columbus Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock joins us today on Leafs Lunch. Thanks for joining us today, Hitch.
Hitch: Thanks Darren, hey Bill.
Bill Watters: How you doing Hitch? Congratulations. You know I was watching the game, I forget which one it was and uh Rimer and Danny Gare almost wet themselves saying you'd clinched a playoff spot, at least I thought they had, so I'm cruising along, I didn't even get to talk with Scott when he was on with Darren earlier and I'm thinkin, oh, ok...then somebody told me they needed a point and I'm like holy cra...I couldn't believe it! I looked at your schedule Hitch, you've got Chicago, you're in St. Louis, I mean it wasn't gonna be easy! As I said to Darren, when a team goes into any Chicago building, goes down 2-0 and earns a point or a win, then they deserve to be in the playoffs and Good Luck to you and your boys.
KH: Well you know what Billy, we ended up for whatever reason our end of our schedule we ended up with the 3 hottest teams, 3 out of the 4 hottest teams in the league. We ended up with Nashville. We ended up with St. Louis and we ended up with Chicago and other than Anaheim those were the 4 hottest teams and we ended up with 'em all on back to back series so it was uh, jeez it was a battle you know every game was, our last 3 games ended in either shootouts or overtimes, so it's been a very emotional last couple weeks.
BW: And you had that Nashville game, you're up 3-1- hitchcock teams don't give up the lead, and they were lucky to get back in it and then they beat you in overtime. I was shocked there!
KH: Never mind giving up the lead, we couldn't even get it out of our own end! (laughs)
BW: (laughing)
KH: We were really struggling for a period and then we go going again but it uh, you know, I've never seen hockey like this in my life. I mean this feels like we've been playing playoff hockey for almost two months now, every game has so much at stake... I've never seen anything like this ever since I started in the league back in the 90s there Bill. I've never seen that- a league that's this competitive every night and the players pay the price they have to pay to keep competing. I've never seen it like this before.
DD: We've been talking about playoff intensity not for days, but for weeks, that's what it's boiled down to and...
BW: And if you think because you finished sixth in the west that you're not going to advance you better watch out because the teams that are... I, I would be very wary of St. Louis as well Hitch. I don't know how you read them, but they've coma along very nicely. They're gonna give somebody a surprise up at the top there.
KH: Well I think they've got collection-wise, maybe the second best group of forwards in the conference. You look at their first three lines they all can score, they're all big, they all can check. Ahh their top 9 or 10 forwards they're as good as anybody ..you know probably Detroit would be a little above 'em but after that, they've got people that can score. They're looking like they're gonna get Kariya back maybe...I mean they're going to be 10-12 deep as far as people that can make plays and score goals.
DD: I want you to talk a little bit about the tying goal last night. Rick Nash the captain gets it with 5 1/2 minutes left versus the Chicago Blackhawks. After the game, you responded by saying that that was the biggest goal in the history of the franchise.
KH: Aww, it was, you know it's so fitting for him to score . He's been our best player, he's been our captain uh you know there's a stigma with probably eight or nine players here that they've had to live with for a lot of years here, um... you know and they've had to live with the stress and the pressure that goes along with that stigma and to eliminate that with that goal... uh...was a great feeling and I think if you saw the joy in his face. He's had to live with the pressure of being on a team that's never made the playoffs and you know we have to..whether you're new to it or whether you're in your first year or second year and just coming into it or you've been here like him and Klesla and Malhotra and Chimera and these guys since almost day one. They've had to live with that every year and it's not been fun for 'em.
BW: Alright you got any recruits coming in? I was asking Darren off-air about Brassard. Is he ..is there a chance he can play in the playoffs Hitch?
KH: Yeah uh there is Bill, also uh back home- you know the thing people don't realize is that everybody else talks about injuries- you know we're almost at 400 man days that we've lost.
DD: Yeah
KH: We have a chance to get them all back. Modin skated for the first time today and...
BW: Oh! I forgot about Modin!
KH: ...and Huselius skated hard today. We're gonna leave 'em both at home and we're probably going to put Huselius in on Saturday. Uhh Klesla is back with us and going hard too, so we totally expect to get Brassard back at some period of time so we could end up with Brassard, Modin,
BW: WHEW
KH: Huselius, Klesla, all back into this group which is going to make us pretty deep.
DD: That changes a lot. Hitch, thanks for taking the time to join us and congratulations one more time.
Commodore will be on the radio at approximately 4:20 here in Cincinnati. I won't be able to transcribe because I'll be on the road to the opening night of my golf league. You can listen at the following:
I thought the conversation was really interesting. First of all, it was pretty clear to me that Watters and Dreger know not only Hitchcock but also Rimer and Gare. Second, they were pretty knowledgeable about the Jackets.
Hitchcock speaks differently on Toronto radio than on Columbus radio. Less formal, less guarded. He seems a little more at ease and forthcoming.
Toronto is going gaga over the Jackets! I heard Mike Peca is going to be on Rogers Hockey Central tonight. I'll try to post a recap if I can get it.
They're thrilled Nash is going to get some valuable playoff experience before he signs with the Leafs.
There has been no talk of that at all recently. They are genuinely interested in the CBJ, not just Rick Nash. When Howson was interviewed, Nash's name barely came up.

He and Dreger are pretty good friends.
The Toronto media (and media in Canada in general) know Hitch very well. He has always been great with the media and has a lot of friends in the business. He is very well respected in Canada and can't hardly go anywhere without being recognized.
