It seems like we're all thinking that..

Furthermore, the description of Salmela has "project" written all over it. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but its very difficult to see where the defense is going, particuarly now that Havelid is out of the equation.

I'm assuming Salmela wasn't really able to crack it due to NJ's depth.... and I'm really hoping, like Peverley.........giving him more of a chance here will let him prove he is more NHL ready than his stint with the Devils.

Now with that being said, Havelid isn't getting any younger, so even if he does resign, its not like he'll be staying #1 here forever...

So... the proverbial question... Who will be our #1 for the forseeable future????? There is such a void now without Havelid that its scary..

Enstrom? He's good, but #1 good? Not yet.. maybe down the road....might fight it career long being a tad undersized.
Bogosian? He's also good, young, time will tell...
Valabik? Can't say he'll be better than a #5-7 defender, unless he really takes huge steps in the offseason to improve all around.
Oystrick? Same thing as said for Valabik.

Hainey. No.
Exelby. No

Is this team really banking on this years draft?

Please god let it be because we're trading Exelby!

Thanks for the years of classy service, Nic! Nice to see him rewarded with an opportunity for the Cup. He'll fit in well in NJ. He's smart, safe, and will give it his all, all the time.

With that said he's a 35 year old pending UFA. Getting a 24 year old under team control for several years that plays a free wheeling style that our coach can instruct? Bonus.

Bout damn time we start bringing in mobile players that can play the up tempo game our coach requires.

I like it.

WHat did you expect him to bring? He is a 25 y/o UFA defensive defenseman. He is not going to put a team over the top. I think you are looking at a 3rd maybe a 2nd if you find a desperate team. Salmela is at least equal return to that if not superior.

Apparently some people think 35 year old 2 month rentals are going to land you a sure fire top 4 NHL defenseman

He's a prospect who could turn into nothing or could be something interesting. I'm willing to wait until I see him with my own eyes before making a decision about the trade.

If he becomes a NHL player it will be in the next 2 years as opposed to a draft pick who is realistically 3-5 years away.

Last spring when Stoeszer left town for Steinbach, I told him he needed to have a big summer because this organization decides on prospects after two years (of a three-year contract).

Not that it's wrong for that to be the way it is I guess -- well you'd prefer better decisions to be made on the front end and not sign guys who aren't going anywhere. There's been a lot of riff raff sitting in the stands for years.

(Not calling Stoeszer riff raff, of course)

Hävelid's comment on the trade, from a Swedish site:

- It's great coming to a team with Stanley Cup as the only goal. In Atlanta the goal was to get out of our own zone first and foremost.

We were pretty hot on Salmela. His first couple of games weren't a great indication of his overall play, as he was just getting used to the North American style.

He played a bunch of games in the AHL, and then only 2-3 NHL ones. But you could see how he improved if you saw those last 2 games.

Yea, he's a bit of a project. But he's got a high ceiling too. A lot of us are bummed, and he hasn't even been here a full season! I believe he was the leading point scorer for defenseman in his previous Finnish league.

Enjoy him. I look at this as a win / win.

Here's a quote from Sutter about Salmela (from a few months ago, but I think it's a good description of his play):

Quote:
Ask Sutter about how rookie defenseman Anssi Salmela is playing and the Devils coach's initial reaction is to laugh. That might be to cover up for the hair loss Salmela is causing Sutter with his sometimes risky play in the defensive zone.

"Sammy is quite a guy in more ways than one," Sutter said laughing. "He's certainly very intriguing. He's got that skill level to his game that you like to see and he's good on our power play. He's one of those guys who doesn't get too rattled too much. But you do have gobs of your hair fall out every now and then in a game."

Sutter likes a lot of what Salmela does, but would prefer him to make the simpler, less-risky play more often.

"He's certainly very intriguing in a lot of ways what he brings," Sutter said. "He brings things to the table and he does some things and you're just like, 'Oh my God, I can't believe he just did that --or just tried that is the best way (to put it). I give him credit. He tries it. He's just got to continue to work on his game and at times I'd like to see him take a little safer approach. Yet, he tries things that a lot of players wouldn't try and 80 percent of the time it works. It's the other 20 that you're sitting there going, 'Oh my God!'

"But, you know what? I love the kid. He does make you chuckle. He does make things certainly interesting behind the bench sometimes."

And who would you have called up? Don't say Kulda- he hasn't even spent a full year in the AHL yet, unlike Lewis who is 24, was drafted in the 2nd round, and still hasn't gotten a shot.

I agree. Lewis is further along in his development and deserves at least a look at the NHL. If he sucks during his stint here, then send him back and bring up Kulda, but might as well give the older guy a shot.

What about the new acquired troika of "two-way" defenseman- Salmela/Skinner/Wilson I would assume these guys would likely be getting a look over Kulda at some point as well.

You have to figure that we are going to be moving another defenseman soon with all these mid twenties AHL+ players in the system.

Or is this just another example of Don Waddell trying to bring home the Calder Cup for the Wolves?

I think Salmela will probably get a shot in ATL, but Skinner and Wilson are very much like Pilar and Kwiatkowski. They probably could play in ATL, but if they ever do, it won't be for long.

Well, that describes Schneider this year, so pair the kid up with Bogosian.
