Rangers trade deadline rumors/speculation (TSN Rumor: Rangers Pushing for Morris)

Quote:
The Rangers are not believed shopping Gomez, though we're told they had been putting out feelers last month. Wonder if the Canadiens, who need a center; were serious bidders for Gomez on July 1, 2007; and have an enormous amount of cap space available starting next season, would be interested?

Blair Betts, a pending unrestricted free agent whose role will apparently change dramatically under the new regime and who has value to a contender as a dependable checker and penalty-killer, is likely available. Detroit is believed to have interest

i dunno, i still notice betts a lot out there and he still averages abou 10 minutes of ice time under tortorella.
i really think the return we would get for him won't be worth it

If LB even recognizes the possibility of a Gomez trade, seems to me Gomez could be as good as gone.

Not gonna get anything more than a 3rd rounder or a mid-level prospect for Betts. Probably not worth it. hang onto him, try to re-sign him, if he walks we still have Anisimov and/or Grachev ready to take his place.

Montreal.

You keep reading about Gainey looking to make a big splash. The Habs have been rumored with Kaberle.

Does Montreal want to unload Andrei Kastsitsyn and his $3.25 million salary who is signed for another two seasons?

They don't have many signed players for next season.

Mike Russo-NY guy covering the Wild and used to cover the Panthers.

Like last year's deadline, every team wants centers. And like at last year's deadline, they will be very hard to come by. But here's a look at some scuttlebutt:

Buffalo: With Ryan Miller hurt, the Sabres might want a goalie. They are dangling Tim Connolly.

Calgary: Is looking for a puck-moving defenseman or top-nine forward. Matthew Lombardi is the bait.

Colorado: Anybody is available other than Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk. Desperately needs goaltending.

Columbus: The Blue Jackets need to make the playoffs for the first time, and GM Scott Howson has broadcast his desire to add a center and is focusing on Ottawa's Antoine Vermette.

Detroit: Needs a goalie, but GM Ken Holland says it's impossible. The Red Wings are looking for a physical, pesky forward, maybe Roberts or Colorado's Ian Laperriere.

Edmonton: Would trade anybody but Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner and Sheldon Souray.

Minnesota: We'll look at the Wild's situation in Monday's newspaper.

New York Rangers: Would trade Scott Gomez if somebody would take his gargantuan contract.

Ottawa: Almost certainly will trade Spezza before his no-trade kicks in July 1, but that might happen at the draft. Look for Chris Neil or Filip Kuba to be dealt.

Philadelphia: So cap-strapped, Glen Metropolit and Ossi Vaananen were waived to create space. The Flyers want a goalie or a defenseman.

Vancouver: Could be active with $3 million worth of cap room

In Renney's system, Betts was essential...in Torts', not so much...if the Wings were to hand over a 2nd round pick, I'd move Betts in a heartbeat...love the guy, but, there's no guarantee he re-signs here in the off-season.

I think there's about four or five possible spots - I'd include Columbus, Florida and Minnesota in that group, too.

Wings have some good young players but I don't think they can get one of them for a UFA like Betts. tough to move him though cause the PK was so good . I doubt he goes

Hopefully we get Avery and the ones with NMC will either play to their abilities or agree to waive the NMC this off season.

I don't see the Rangers being able to move any of the big contracts before the deadline. Come the off season I see at least one moving in Gomez and maybe a 2nd in Rozy.

If they can clear up that 12 mil this off season then I will be much happier. Then we are only saddled with 2 bad contracts in Redden and Drury. Even Drury would have only 3 seasons left after this one.

So Redden would be the one that will stick with us awhile so hopefully Tort's can get the most out of him.

so there is no way Drury would waive his NMC to go to LA for example (where has a home) or Colorado?

I would really have much more regret in letting Gomez go, than Drury. Atleast Gomez, is fast and can gain the zone like no other. , he just sometimes suffers mentally (which can be worked on). But he creates offense , and has speed.
Drury on the other hand, besides his supposed "leadership abilities", I see no true positives in him.

Chicago could be a destination for Betts if the Rangers move him. They have been linked to Dominic Moore and Jeff Halpern.

They have a stash of youth.

Betts for Troy Brouwer

I don't know about clearing up $12 million...more like not being saddled with that much of a cap hit for the next three years.

Of course not.

As for that Montreal possibility...how about Gomez, Girardi and a 2nd for Tanguay and Higgins...let Tanguay $5.5 million go at year's end, and put Higgins between Korpikoski and Callahan on the 3rd line?

...I love the trade deadline.

We need to move one of these NMC this trade deadline. We can then look for a couple wingers and/or a center in the 2-4mil per year range.

I don't know. Tanguay could be the sniper we need. If he plays good while he's here, I say try and re-sign him for cheap.

No. If we move big salary, we better go for Kovy as a FA in 2010.

Sjostrom does what Betts does on the PK and he's faster and has a little bit of offensive talent. I can see it happening.
