It took about 10 years, but I finally have a reason to like Carolina now that they have this 2 goal lead.

They would still obviously prefer to keep a 4th rounder, then give it away for nothing.

Nice to see Carolina pull out by 2 though, OT would have sucked. Although I think I would have preferred an NYR win, I am far from complaining.

I think Toronto has 2 4th rounders - they acquired Tampa's in that weird deal involving Kolzig. Pretty smart trade if Burke was told ahead of the draft about the penalty.

He has a very good goaltender for them, especially this year...this is when the cap hurts your team though, once a team has a good season, everyone wants to cash in...the B's will find this out now that this has happened...Fernandez will not be with the club next year, and will be replaced by Rask I would think...

Whatever, he's a good goalie, they're probably hoping this motivates him to put up numbers like this year.

I like it because it stalls on any UFA's they can sign or big name players they can get.

I honestly expected a contract around the 5mill mark after seeing what Huet was given. It is a big contract hit, but with the numbers Thomas has put up it is good to see him get the pay day he deserves.

Interesting to see how this will effect the Bruins salary structure going forward as they still have Kessel and Krecji to sign.

I don't know if it's brutal, but it's market value...some say Dion Phaneuf at 7M in Calgary is brutal?

It's a smart deal for Boston. Rask ain't gonna be ready next year and Thomas has the best stats in the league. He's going to have to get paid and the team going with a paycut Manny wasn't going to do them any good next year.

I'm amazed at how little faith the Bruins fans have in their GM in figuring out the cap for Krejci and Kessel. They seem to completely forget that Marco Sturm is going to return next season. As annoying as HF Habs fans are, at least a lot of them have faith in Bob Gainey.

Don't get me wrong he's played well enough to earn that type of money, but the situation the bruind are in with some key restricted FA and the fact that Rask is probably ready to step up and play,3 years at 5 million per is just crazy

The bruins are almost going to be at 9 million in nets

I think it is a brutal deal in that it really handcuffs their negotiations for Kessel and Krejci, not to mention Lucic and Wheeler soon after. With the cap going down, and precious flexibility to begin with, I don't see why you would want to give a 34 year old goalie that kind of term and dollars, especially when you have a youngester waiting to take over.

As a Habs fan, I love this deal.

Fernandez is a UFA at the end of the year...They won't re-sign him. So they should be slightly over 6 million next year for their 2 goalies (Rask and Thomas). This year they spent about 5.4 million on Thomas and Fernandez...so its about the same thing.

Oh, didn't see the bonus guys. These bonuses are throwing me right off. It says Blake Wheeler makes 875k a year but that his cap hit is 2.825 million...I assume thats because of a bonus as well?

Sorry about that H4L!

Pretty much. NHL changed the rule with bonuses and it ended up purposely ****ing over teams. If they took bonuses off the salary cap again teams wouldn't look like they were in so much trouble. It was done to help floor teams make the cap, but it ended up crippling cap teams get under.

Players are going to leave and the Bruins just have to act accordingly.

In 3 years, the team will likely move to developing for a younger squad, a youth team lead by Rask, Wheeler, Krejci and Lucic. I don't see Savard, Sturm, Bergeron and Thomas hanging around. This opens up the Bruins to bring up the Joe Colbourn's and Zach Hamill's of the world to come in. If you're wondering where Kessel is, I bet they take the three Draft picks with him and let him walk. Players are going to leave and the team just needs to stick to their youth.

Games to follow tonight:

Buffalo @ Washington

Atlanta @ Florida

Toronto @ Philadelphia

Buffalo will likely have to win all their remaining games, to end up at 95 points. It looks like 93 might be the minimum this year. However, they do have the tie-breaker against us, Florida and the Rangers.

Florida may benifit from the tough schedule of the Rangers. Plus they have the tie-breaker. 3 out of 5 is a minimum.
