Downie suspended indefinitely (in AHL)

http://www.theahl.com/headlines/inde...rticle_id=9604

Quote:
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The American Hockey League today announced that Norfolk Admirals right wing Steve Downie has been suspended indefinitely, pending league review, as a result of his actions in a game at Hershey on Feb. 28.

Downie was assessed a game misconduct under AHL Rule 41.1 for physical abuse of an official.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Nice pick, Clarkie.

The official probably deserved it.

Anyone got video of this?

For those of you that haven't seen Downie play in the OHL, there is no question that the kid has tremendous skill. We saw some of that here with his brief time with the Flyers. Of course, we all know the baggage he carries and his subsequent discipline issues...or lack there of.

Steve Downie has the tools to become a very good 3rd line player in the NHL, whether we ever see it, is a completely different story.

There is no question the guy is a headcase, even a ticking timebomb. But for those of you to suggest he can't play hockey...you don't know what hell you're talking about.

Having said all that, I couldn't care less at this point that he's not a Flyer. With crap like this...I'm actually relieved he's not. We need the negative publicity like a hole in the head.

Get well soon Downie~

A lot of guys have the tools to be NHL players, there are just other reasons why they don't. For Downie, it's that he has the brain of a 4-year old.

Is there a reason this is on the Flyers board? Other than a golden opportunity to rip Downie?

Where are the threads for other AHL suspensions that aren't Phantoms?

Have at 'er boys.

I was at the game last night. I say it's gonna be 25 games, maybe even 50 since Downie has lots of history with disciplinary issues.

I actually used it to rip a bad draft pick.

Guys we could have had:

Tuukka Rask/Ondrej Pavelec (satisfies our need for a 'blue chip' goaltender according to some)

TJ Oshie (he's good)

Matt Niskanen (we could use him)

Marc-Eduoard Vlasic (we could use him)

Paul Stastny (he's not too bad)

Could be the end of Downie, abuse of an official is not going to be taken lightly.
Loved when we traded him, love it more now. Kid needs some SERIOUS mental counselling if he hopes to continue his carreer as a pro hockey player.

I'm almost positive Niskanen was taken by Dallas the pick right before Downie. But that's beside the point.

This suspension doesn't affect the Flyers in any way, shape or form. Downie was part of a package that brought Carle over here, so it wasn't a wasted pick in the least.

For GKJ, the future GM and head scout of the Flyers...

1997 Draft

The Stars drafted Brendan Morrow in the 25th round. (I trust I don't need to post his stats, we all know who he is and the player he is)

Your Los Angeles Kings selected, in the 15th round...(you saw that, right? 15th round. That's 10 rounds ahead of 25 btw...) Matt Zultek.

Huh? Matt Zultek? Who the hell is Matt Zultek???

Let me share the info I pulled up...

They traded down from 20.

That was before I was interested in anyone more than the Flyers, so I wasn't all that worried about Matt Zultek.

Downie on the other hand, was considered a reach by ALL armchair GMs across the world. I believe the first post on this board upon being drafted was that "Phantoms fans will love him." And was considered by others 'a 3rd round talent at best.' I wasn't the only one.

"MAN I'm tired of being right!" -- Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

I said this BEFORE we traded him -- the kid has zero patience and it would only be a matter of time before he really ****ed up. The Flyers saw it too, and I'm glad they did. Homer traded a bust prospect and a semi-bust defenseman for a guy who has done a nice job on our blue line. The man knows his ****.

I saw Zultek in Trenton a few times...the guy was MASSIVE. His stats say 6'4" but he definitely looked a lot bigger than that. He was a PPG player for them too, and happened to have some good games when I watched him. But it is the ECHL...

You miss the point.

It's very easy to pull the picks apart a few years later. It actually means squat if you ask me. Anybody can do, and I proved that fact. I'm pretty sure whoever the guy in charge of picking Matt ****ing Zultek had his reasons...as did the people that worked around him.

Of note, other teams that drafted before the Stars did (at 25th), two other teams picked up LW's.

Bruins (8th round) - Sergei Samsanov
Blackhawks (13th round) - Dan Clearly
Kings (15th round) - Matt ****ing Zultek
Stars - (25th round) - Brenden Morrow

Hindsight is 20/20, but I ask...who would you rather have on your team today?

I'm interested in this thread because Steve Downie is a hugely entertaining train wreck, and I'd LOVE to see a video of whatever he did this time

Sorry, that's exactly the point. Hindsight, is 20/20.

Do yourself a favour...

Look at his (Steve Downie) stats in the OHL, and tell me that he doesn't have talent. For the record, he was 1.23 PPG (if my math is correct) in the O. He was plenty good enough to play for Team Canada as well. To suggest that Steve Downie doesn't/didn't have talent, is simply ridiculous.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=76798

As I mentioned in the post above to GKJ, looking back at picks after the fact, it's VERY EASY to dissect the picks apart.

Who's to say Pavelic isn't the next Lehtonen/Dipietro/Leclaire??? You simply don't know. And no, I'm not suggesting he is. I'm just merely commenting.
