NHL.com has Alexander Semin being drafted by Washington with the 13th overall pick via Dallas. What was involved in that trade? I'm assuming it wasn't a draft day trade, or maybe not. Thanks.
Yeah, it was draft day. Washington traded us the 26th overall (Vagner), 42nd overall (Holtet), and a 6th rounder in 2003 (don't know who exactly that ended up being) for the 13th overall. Terrible deal. It's partly where we got our cynicism about always trading down.
The Caps had the 26th pick in the first place from a deadline deal with Philly where they sold off Adam Oates.
edit: It's kind of funny that we could've easily had both Alex Semin and Mike Green. Sort of.
Ahh, thanks. That was right before I started following the draft.
Follow-up question. Was the trade done like right before the Semin pick or was it a while before that? I'm curious if Semin was Washington's "guy" and the Stars simply didn't like him or if it was more the concept of Washington just "moving up."
I couldn't tell you exactly when it happened, but it was pretty clear that Washington targeted him specifically. They already had the 12th overall pick. If they wanted to just move up in general they would've packaged that with some of the picks they sent Dallas' way.
I'm not sure if Dallas didn't like Semin specifically, or if they just wanted more quantity to restock. The system had been basically stripped bare at this point.
Interesting. Pretty bad draft for the Stars but looking around the league it looks like a pretty weak draft all around, both in terms of top end talent and quantity of NHL players.
Here's an idea for a new section: all-time franchise trades.
It would be hard, and probably require a ****-ton of research, but as far as I can tell it'd be a unique resource.
Sounds like a major summer project or if I get enough time before the semester starts up again, could try to do it then. Definitely would be cool to have that though.
Haven't updated the four lists yet, but thought it was significant enough to post. I'll update the lists after the Calgary game tomorrow night.
Suiting up against Edmonton moved Brenden Morrow into a tie with Darryl Sydor for 10th all-time on the franchise list for games played. He should move into sole possession against Calgary.
Marc Crawford is three wins away from moving into sole possession of 6th all-time for most wins by a head coach.
And of course, the Stars break the franchise record road winning streak with 8 consecutive victories.
Won't highlight everything that has happened since I've last updated...but everything has been updated and should be 100% completely up to date. It only took 6 1/2 hours 0_0.

Brenden Morrow moved into 9th all-time in games played when he suited up in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Alex Goligoski moved into the top 500 in terms of games played for the franchise.
Not that significant, but Tom Wandell has now tied Craig Ludwig in goals for the franchise with 11.

Will up the four lists later on, but thought I'd post this first.
Morrow is up to 8th in games played.
He scored his 38th game winning goal against the Kings, moving him into sole possession of 3rd all-time.
Crawford coached his 150th game for the franchise tonight against Minnesota.
Benn moved into a tie for 6th with 9 others for 5th all-time in goal scoring streak. It's the 5th time since moving to Dallas.
Morrow is up to 8th in games played.
He scored his 38th game winning goal against the Kings, moving him into sole possession of 3rd all-time.
Just noticed that he finished the season by moving into a tie for 2nd all-time with Bellows. There's going to be a lot of movement for him next year if he puts up his usual numbers. The most significant being a place in the Top 10 scoring list, of which he is right on the cusp.
The Stars add their 9th and 10th Hall of Famers. These 2 are particularly satisfying because their chances of getting in would've been remote without their time with the club.
Richards (likely) finishes his Stars career only one place behind Nieuwendyk at 27th all-time in franchise assists with 157. Curiouser and curiouser...
Following the Stars 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks...
Dowell, Dvorak, Souray, Ryder and Fiddler all suited up and became the 570th/571st/572nd/573rd/574th players all-time to play for the Stars franchise.
Jake Dowell became the 23rd player to play in the #11 sweater.
Radek Dvorak became the 15th player to play in the #20 sweater.
Vernon Fiddler became the 10th player to play in the #38 sweater.
Sheldon Souray became the 12th player to play in the #44 sweater.
And Michael Ryder became the 1st ever play to play in the #73 sweater.
Also, Brenden Morrow played in his 750th game for the franchise. He is only the 8th player in franchise history to hit the 750 game mark.
Sheldon Souray hit three franchise marks. Recording an assist and a penalty. He became the 450th player all-time to record a point, 446th player all-time to record an assist, and the 480th player all-time to take a penalty.

Just gonna touch on the upcoming/passed records in the top 10 franchise wise..
Morrow will move into sole possession of 7th all-time in games played when he suits up against the Jackets on Saturday.
With his game winning goal against the Blues, Morrow moved into sole possession of 2nd place in franchise history with 41 game winners. He now sits only behind Modano..who's number is bascially impossible to reach for Morrow.
Steve Ott's 10 penalty minutes put him within one penalty minute of 6th place all-time in penalty minutes.
And one more win for Kari Lehtonen will give him sole possession of 9th place all-time in goaltender wins for the franchise.
