I know this is early, and we still have the playoffs, and that their may not be a season next year, but lets assume there is, are their any UFA's you would like to see the Habs sign? Are there any others hat you hope won't get qualifying offers and then we can go after?

Sorry I guess I should have posted this originally. I haven't looked at the list since it was last updated but I think is pretty close http://www.geocities.com/floridapant.../free2004.html

my lengthy 2 cents:

Glen Murray, (YES. if we get him 4.5 to 5.5 mil... would be huge upgrade over Kovy imo)

Brian Rolston, (NO. tho it would be nice, but he probably wants top 6 minutes and top 6 money. would be a great replacement for Juneau of course)

Alexei Zhitnik, (NO. would be nice, but we have Souray/Markov on LD)

Igor Korolev, (YES. would come cheap and is an excellent defensive player loaded with skill)

Steve Konowalchuk, (YES, but Colorado will probably resign him)

Andrei Nikolishin, (YES. would be an excellent replacement for Juneau as well)

Tyler Wright, (NO. Tough bugger. But we don't have room.)

Jon Klemm, (NO. Komi needs to play. He'd be great right now tho.)

Kris Draper, (YES. probably overpriced tho with his big offensive year)

Niklas Lidstrom, (YES. Yeah right...)

Brendan Shanahan, (YES. Yeah right...)

Zigmund Palffy, (YES. Definitely. He's a scoring machine, but he likes his privacy, I doubt very much he'd come to Montreal)

Andreas Dackell, (NO)
Jim Dowd, (YES)
Joe Juneau, (If we need him, sure.)
Alexei Kovalev, (NO)
Darren Langdon, (YES)
Yannick Perrault, (NO)
Stephane Quintal, (NO)
Steve Begin, (HELL YES)
Jean-Francois Damphousse, (OK)
Gordie Dwyer, (OK)
Eric Fichaud, (I DUNNO)
Mathieu Garon, (HELL YES)
Marcel Hossa, (YES)
Martti Jarventie, (I DUNNO)
Mike Ribeiro, (HELL YES)
Michael Ryder, (HELL YES)
Sheldon Souray, (HELL YES)
Niklas Sundstrom, (MAYBE, IF WE NEED HIM)
Patrick Traverse, (HELL NO)
Rene Vydreny, (WHO?)
Richard Zednik, (HELL YES)

John Madden, (HELL YES, SCREW ROLSTON)
Grant Marshall, (YES. I'VE ALWAYS LIKED THIS GUY)
Turner Stevenson, (YES. WOULD BE NICE FOR THE 4TH LINE)

Daniel Alfredsson, (HELL YES)

Keith Primeau, (YES, depending on salary. Would be great on LW - where he belongs - on either of our lines)

Mario Lemieux, (HELL YES! )

Dallas Drake, (YES.)

Mike Rathje, (NO. We have Souray/Markov on LD already.)
Mike Ricci, (YES. Great checking center. No speed, not that big, but he's a piece of sandpaper and he doesn't ever stop.)
Scott Thornton, (YES. Should never have gotten rid of him imo.)

If we sign both Ricci and Thornton and keep Sundstrom, we can reunite a dynamite checking line that can also score...

Just get Alfredsson

Ottawa, Montreal, both cities are near, won't make much a difference for Alfredsson, he will only notice once he enters Montreal how things are different here

I'd look for third and fourth line help, more toughness and speed(Rolston can give size and speed).

If we don't resign Kovalev, then i say we go for a top line forward.

He is restricted so we need to give them a conditional choice

Craig Conroy will be awesome!

Well, I didn't want him to be president, eh? He does have a lot of skill, much like Juneau. Good hands.

Dwyer is for Hamilton or for our 4th line. Kovalev sucks, I'd much rather have Glen Murray or Palffy or Alfredsson.

He's had 1-1/2 good years, and two good playoff runs. Other than that, he's a floater.

I will only say it here once to avoid conflict, and I hope for the best, but expect nothing.

He's not the guy I would have reached out for, that's for sure.

Personally I would like Craig Conroy who would provide the third line with a strong presence at centre. He would be much more accustomed to play against Joe Thornton or Mats Sundin than anyone on the current roster. Plus he has the ability to create offense for the third line, something we haven't seen for the last 3 years with Juneau.

I would also love to see Gainey sign Conroy when he is an unrestricted free agent this summer.......an underrated 2-way player in my mind

I'm with you guys. We're talking about using him on the third line (and what's the joke, that's where he'd have to fit in on our team!), and he is being used on 1st and 2nd lines nowadays! I think he'd be an awesome acquisition, depending on the dollars of course. I hope we dump some useless vets who are getting paid too much (cough, cough, Quintal 1.5 mil, cough, Juneau 2 mil, cough, Dykhuis 1.6 mil.. even Perreault's 2.8 mil depending on how he does in the playoffs, etc) so we can go after some of these "smarter" investments.

Kovalev - if he works out well, but still absolutely not for $6.6M per year he makes now. Canadiens have been stinged before signing moody offensive types on a big contracts, I'd rather walk away than be bitten by another Audette/Cher situation.

One of John Madden, Brian Rolston or Jason Wiemer, to be our 3rd line center. There will be huge demand for first two guys though.

I really think we should try and ink Jim Dowd for another season. He's been a great surprise for us, and his legs are still moving quite well, I think he's easily got another season left in him.

Like the list alot and completely agree... I'd also say this... if Perrault decides to turn up to the playoff and continue this good play. Then it wouldn't hurt maybe to sign him up for another year if possible... but for no more than $1 million... he would be handy to have... and also teach some of our youngsters about how to take the draw... though if we couldn't get him it wouldn't hurt us at all it would just give us some more money to wield in the market...

Possible 3rd 4th lines targets...

Avery (LA), Laperriere (LA), Cole (CAR) a trade in the off season would be nice aswell, Ott (DAL) if possible once again a trade. Rolston (BOS) though would be surprised if he'd join us.

There are tons of great players UFA this next summer. Kovalev is just maybe a rent; it will depend how he will adapt with our top two lines. It's been a while we didn't have a true talented winger, last time was Recchi? or Czerkawsky, Berezin? These last two didn't fit with our system.

Kovalev will be a test for what type of player we need. I have a doubt he's not the type we need, I think that guys like Rolston, Madden, Laperrière are better fits but they play on different lines, a different role. Also Alfredson is a better fit for an offensive forward, Palfy comes to mind too. Murray would be a perfect big offensive winger to play with Saku or Ribeiro. ... if only we can get him...

Well, a lot of these guys would be very nice additions to the team. A guy like Murray sure would be liked here, but I doubt he'd want to come.

I imagine how Bruins fans would react if he came to play here.
