I'm not sure what this means, TBH. Bottom line is Gomez is among the league leaders in shots on goal, even though, among that group, he has the second lowest shooting percentage. He leads his team in shots, yet has a horrid shooting percentage. The common defense of Gomez in this regard is this consistent shooting results in rebounds or scoring chances. Tonight, on one occasion it did, and it resulted in a goal. But the overwhelming number of times, it does not. It results in nothing.

If you want to bring the +/- stat into play...

Zherdev was the ONLY player on the roster with anything over E going into this game.

+7

Even after the turn over, he is +7.

He contributed to a goal FOR tonight in his 6 minutes.

I'm not saying you are that guy but you make it sound like that.
I am looking at the big picture.

A win is great.

The long term health of the team is more important.

I'd like to have our best young players stick around.

You don't think a 40 minute benching was a little excessive? Why isn't anyone else held accountable? What about the other 5 guys on the ice that play?

It's not about Z or Gomez it's about doing whatever it takes to make the playoffs. If Z is a superstar he'll come out pissed on Saturday and put up three points and draw some penalties.

dude relax its not the end of the world...i guarantee zherdev gave some sort of pouty response in between periods and thats what got him glued to the bench, its part of his MO, nothing new here...

I definitely need to.

I HATE when players are benched. I never liked it.

I hate the idea of singling out one guy, when there were 5 other players on the ice that could have also done something to prevent a goal against.

5 guys including the goaltender.

All you have to do is watch the game and you'll see the continuing trend of awful shots, of terrible turnovers. Not saying he isn't involved offensively, he is. But when you're playing with the guys who are playing the best on the team, you're bound to get points. He's been playing with the two best scorers and/or the two hardest workers on the team.

And how are you going to laugh at his Carolina performance? You think he WASN'T awful? Now THAT's funny.

Making the playoffs is everything right now. Z is only a Ranger for the next couple months. If he wants the contract EARN IT. Take your coaching like a man and improve your game.

You can't tippy toe around a guy like Z. Either he wants to be here or he doesn't. I'd say Torts did more for the long term health of the team by benching him. It's a character test before you end up giving a fool a king's ransom.

Seems a bit excessive, but it's very possible.
It would be bothering me if they went on to lose, but since they played 2 great periods and won the game, he proved it was the right move.

well, let's just all wait here quietly until some kind Tennesean tells us what happened. I don't even know why you even come to this board if it isn't to discuss.

****tard.

i hear ya i dont agree with it either and there are certainly more deserving players on this team but im sure somoething other than that giveaway lead to him being benched...lets just hope this pisses him off in a positive way and he comes out on a mission saturday. i said from day one guys like z were going to have a really hard time with torts, i hope z doesnt crawl into a corner and whine about this.

Hey, I totally agree with you know when you have settled down a little. It just sounded so hard.

This I agree with totally, but you didn't sound like this 10 minutes ago

I'm also entitled to voice my opinion on the situation without being personally attacked.

I don't have to love every thing Tortorella does. Just as people did with Renney.

Tortorella is not immune to criticism.

I think its comical that you cant give the guy any credit, regardless of his performance. He was flying all over tonight.

Also, the team as a whole was awful the other night.

absolutely. the board wasn't nearly as forgiving when Renney benched Zherdev (and I think Zherdev played 13 minutes in that game).

you also seem to be in love with Z

Torts did what he had to do to get the win, I doubt it hurt the mental wellness of this team long term because one person got water duty. They're grown adult professional athletes, if they cant take a little tough love then they shouldn't be on the team in the first place. If Z is everything we all hyped him up to be in October he will put up a few points vs. Philly
