3/12/09 Canes vs Stars... Rebound game? BOX OUT! BOX OUT!

where's the game: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX
when does it start: 8:30PM EST
where to catch it: Fox Sports Carolinas, 99.9 FM The Fan

why to watch it:
Both teams are fighting for their playoff lives. The Hurricanes are sitting 7th in the Eastern Conference (tied for 6th in points, Pittsburgh has a game in hand) and are 2 points back of being alone in 5th for the time being. They're also 2 points from being in 9th as the Rangers have a game in hand. From the same standpoint, Dallas is sitting 9th in the Western Conference but are 2 points from being alone in 7th. Count on both teams fighting it out to get themselves in better position for the last 12 or so games of the season.

lineups:
TBA

Injuries:
Carolina: Scott Walker (day-to-day), Joni Pitkanen (day-to-day, expected back vs Washington)
Dallas: Brenden Morrow, Brad Richards, Jere Lehtinen, Sergei Zubov, Fabian Brunnstrom, Mark Parrish, and Toby Petersen

who to watch for:

Eric Staal - it's been 2 games since he's scored after the 6 point breakout in Tampa. Rule of "50% chance of Staal" says he's due.

Cam Ward - the Hurricanes #1 has started to make people around the league take notice, will he continue to get the nod in net or will Chairman Mo give the 30 game winner a rest?

Mike Ribiero - the Stars #1 scorer is on a 5 game point streak, will he continue that against the Hurricanes?

James Neal - the Stars rookie has been mostly overlooked in discussions this year, but he has some serious potential. Could be the next Erik Cole type gamebreaking powerforward.

Marco Ramius - Captain of the failboat himself. Watch out for his buddy Jack Ryan too, apparently most things in there don't react too well to bullets.

special teams:
Carolina Powerplay 16.9% (20th) vs Dallas Penalty Kill 79.7% (21st)
Dallas Powerplay 16.1% (23rd) vs Carolina Penalty Kill 80.2% (19th)

what happens if the canes lose:

So does having one of our best defensemen out increase or decrease the chances of winning? I am confused.

Stay tuned for the mysterious ways of the flotationally challenged boat.

Not liking the idea of Ward back in the net. If any game screams Leighton, it's this one.

Now I am confused, if Ward was out, would Pitkanen be in net? Or, is Leighton going to play defence?

Babchuk would be in the net, Pitkanen would be there to make sure Anton's water bottle is always full.

He would only be in the net when the second and third defensive pair was on the ice. When Anton was taking a D shift there would be no need for a goalie.

This is one of those games that if we didn't play the night before we should win. But since we played a hard fought game that went to OT last night, not sure how we are going to be.

So by playing last night and our guys not having legs does that bode better for us than if they didn't play last night and had their legs?

Does playing a tired Cam over a well rested Leighton bode better for us?

But then Dallas is totured in the injured department so that should cancel out our tired legs.

Turco was pulled in his last game, so that should cancel out a tired Cam.

Guess what I'm trying to say is...................

All aboard the failboat.

You are new to this board so you are forgiven , but for the future remember.... Canes can make ECHL goalie look like Vezina candidate.

I expect Turco to stand on his head tonight and have a shutout.

I'm in high hopes that our boys(at least Babs) have enough left in them to pull this one through... I would think that if we come out and play with some energy, we should have this game... Hence, we will come out and use what little energy we have left to flag down the failboat.

If Dallas loses they'll set some kind of franchise record losing streak for the Stars.

Here comes the Failboat!
