I just read most of Jesters posts in this thread. And what... Hypocritical? Sanctimony? Really? These are big words?

I guess education doesn't mean much to some people. Also, just because this the internet doesn't mean that you should dumb down your speech. Ridiculous. If anything you should be thanking him for using big words. It makes you smarter.

And chicks dig big words.

On the note of vocab does the name of the "obsequious banter" thread seem wrong to any one else, or am I missing an in joke?

Fixed.

How's that for dumbing down the quality of posts? Haha.

GKJ used a word he didn't actually know...

It doesn't make any sense. You're right.

If he'd wanted his multi-year deal last year, he would not have been able to sign with Detroit.

From Hossa's perspective, it's a relatively big risk at that moment in his career to sign such a deal...he goes out and has a significant injury that affects him long-term, it's possible the contract he might have signed last summer would never be there again.
Absolutely. I don't think anybody that follows the NHL would suggest that the one year deal Hossa took, was in efforts to win the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings. However, his contract length (or lack there of) aside...shows no signs of a discount.

If he get's injured, yes, he's potentially screwed.

Right, but giving up years is a discount to a great degree.

They, quite literally, weren't capable of affording him on the type of deal he was capable of getting last year...he gave them a discount to a one-year contract that they could make work. The value of 1-year 7.5M is less than 5-years 40M.

For reasons much the same as the value of an NMC.

Depends how you want to dissect it I guess.

Pros and cons for both sides on a one-year deal, and on long term deals. Take Briere for instance. At the time of the signing, many (not myself) thought it was great to have such an offensive player locked up. That deal, IMO, is killing the Flyers more than any other contract today. Hindsight is 20/20...we don't need to have that discussion again. It's been done, many times.

If Hossa signed for 5 mil, then I'd have an easier time saying he went to Detroit at a discount. The fact that it's not a long term deal, but he's being paid market value, makes it difficult for me to call it a dicount. I do see where you're coming from though, I just don't completely agree with it.
