What do you see as Kassian's upside?

At worst where do you see him? 3rd liner?

I love both answers. It's kinda like Myers, who I still believe is, at worst, a future version of Smehlik.

In either case he brings needed qualities to the team. To me that makes him a safe pick.

If Kassian is available when Buffalo picks, I'd be extremely surprised if the Sabres don't pick him. He allows you to dress an enforcer without the accompanying drop off in play that usually comes with playing a pugilist. And he's marketable as heck, especially in a city like Buffalo.

With all of that said, I still think the Oil or Preds take him.

If this guy is anything close to Lucic i doubt he would be around at #13 but you never know.

This will replaces peters with alot more skill too.

Lucic was a second rounder who had skating issues in his draft year.

I hate direct player comparisons.tm

They've been 50 / 50 with their ginger defensemen, 2 who could play defense (Schoenfeld and Ramsey) and 2 that were glorified forwards (Housley and Campbell).

I will be extremely surprised if they DO pick him. I can't see Regier taking a guy with skating issues at 13. Not to say I don't want the Sabres to take him, I just don't think they will.

Skating issues aside, Lucic was clearly undervalued in his draft year. What's dangerous is now that teams want their own version, rightly so, but they risk overvaluing a player simply due to the fact that he's comparable to a player who exceeded his expectations. I don't know enough about Kassian or, I guess, Carter Ashton (or about Lucic in his draft year) but I'm concerned that the Lucic-ness of those players' game would cause them to be higher on a draft board than maybe they should be. I would apply this to all teams, not just the Sabres.

Even in a weaker draft, at 13 the Sabres should be looking at a player whose low-end should still project to be a second-line forward or second pair defenseman. They may not get a perfect player but they should get someone who can develop into more than just a complimentary player. If Kassian is that, great, but if not I would hope they would either move (up or down) or aim at a guy like Kreider, Glennie, Leblanc, etc. I know Kassian gets a "safe pick" moniker but guys with that label certainly do bust out. Heisten and Novotny are examples from this organization and I would say Chipchura is an example as well.

I would rather take Josefson or Glennie than Kassian.

I like Josefson too, but he would be the uber safe pick. Jochen Hecht at # 13.

He's also a center. Which has to be important given the state of the Sabres center pipeline. Unless people who are more knowledgeable than me think he will end up on the wing over here.

I wonder if, at any point in the near future, we have a kid make our squad right after his draft year. I know it's very "un-Buffalo", but I feel as though we're the only team to have not had one of those this decade.

Am I missing someone? Kalinin?

Didn't McKee make the team after his draft year? Of course, that was 96, so outside of your decade mark, but he's the only one I can think of.

Myers looks to be a single season maturation Jbuds- most teams who have guys who make the jump directly are either in the lottery.

Speaking of size over skill... It seems the "old" NHL may be on the rise once more. Bigger guys who can play are no longer a luxury. Kassian, Ashton, Caron may see their stock on the rise due to their builds.

Same thing you are. I said, before WJC he was considered a late draft pick. Now, he's dumped up. I said, if he drops to say the 3rd round or even later, then i wouldn't mind getting him. But, another small forward makes no sense for Buffalo to pick him in round 2. I do agree he's a mid-2nd round prospect now due to a very strong WJC. Pre-WJC he was projected 5th or 6th, atleast according to the Hockey news.

I would love for Buffalo to select Kassian. He has been my guy i wanted since day 1. Even when we had chances of really slipping and finishing closer to the bottom, i still debated on another message board Kassian vs. other guys who are projected top 10. Kassian is far from a sure prospect. But, his potential is one of the highest in this draft.

The one guy who i keep hearing may drop due to high amount of forwards who may go early on and John Moore may be rising, is Ryan Ellis. He is according to the scouts i've heard a Brian Campbell clone who plays very good on defense. If anyone saw him at the WJC, he was outstanding. He will be a top PP QB for years to come and a defense of Myers, Ellis, Sekera, Butler and Weber just makes me drool.

As much as I love Kassian, if Ellis is on the board during Buffalo's pick, i have a really hard time believing they would pass up on him. Even if both him and Kassian are available.

Does anyone else see our defense core consisting of only players we drafted a few years down the road? That's pretty amazing.

Sekera-Myers
Butler-Weber
Brennan-Gragnani
x Fienhage

Not entirely sure which sides they play on, but still, we have an impressive group.

Sabres draft preview is up: http://hockeysfuture.craveonline.com...imagefield.y=0

I like Josefson and Kassian in the 1st. I love Josefson, I really think he can turn into a Mike Richards type. Kassian gives us two testicles, more than doubling the 1.5 we currently have in the rest of the team.

What does everyone think of Zach Budish? If he falls to us in the 2nd I will be ecstatic.

a clone of brian campbell would NOT be good on defense.
