IMO its a no brainer, Ilya Kovalchuck. He can win a game by himself.

kovalchuck hands down. there are only maybe 3 or 4 players i would take over kovalchuck. i dont care how many intangibles ricahrds brings, a player like kovalchuck doesnt come around often

Thats exactly how I feel as well. IMO some posters (*cough Canadians) greatly exagerate the impact of "intangibles."

I hate correcting spelling errors, but nothing grinds my gears more than "Kovalchuck". It's Kovalchuk.

As for the poll, yeah I'll take Ilya. His skill level is off the charts, Richards' intangibles don't match up to Ilya's talent.

Here is the way I look at it right now. The flyers with Mike Richards than they are with Kovalchuk in my opinion. It could be different for other teams but i truly believe if you switched the two, the flyers would not be the same team.

Obviously the Flyers wouldnt be the same team?

Swap places and I say Flyers would be the frontrunner in the east.

You spelt it the North American butchered pronunciation way. It's Kovalchuk.

Totally agree, and I feel the same way about Parise for the Devils. That's why I hate threads like this.

Yes, Kovalchuk is a rare talent, but Richards is an elite player in the NHL and one of the biggest reasons for the Flyers success.

Kovalchuk without hesitation for the Devils team. We have plenty of character/intangible/tough/defensive minded guys in the locker room, we need elite scoring wingers.

Put Kovalchuk on a line with Elias oh boy can I dream?

Why? The Flyers don't have enough goalscorers?

Briere
Carter
Gagne
Richards
Hartnell
Knuble

Yes, Kovalchuk is a better scorer than any of these guys, but he is the focus of Atlanta's offense. I think on Philly he scores 40-45 goals per year. Excellent to be sure, but not worth losing Richards over.

For my team I bring in Richards. He plays a great two-way game and he is an great center.

If I get just one player to be the main attraction, than perhaps I'll take Kovalchuk ... but if I already have a half-decent supporting cast, I'll take Richards.

Kovalchuk has been a minus player every year of his career.

Yes, Kovalchuk will score maybe 10-15+ more goals each year, but Richards' defense more than makes up for that difference.

There is nothing intangible about Richards' defensive prowess - he is not nearly as flashy as Kovalchuk but he is one of the best 2-way players in the game.

He can fill more roles in more situations, and makes less money.

Plus there is the small chance that one day Kovalchuk bolts for the KHL or starts getting temperamental as he gets older.

The ultimate goal for my team would be to win the Stanley Cup, and I can envision Richards being the first guy to lift it for his team one day ... but I have difficulty seeing Kovalchuk do the same.

But I'll reserve judgment until I see what Kovalchuk can do with a better supporting cast.

He is not nearly as effective when he has no one to play with, his numbers with Hossa and Savard were brilliant. If he played for the Flyers I think he would challenge for 60.

Also, the flyers like to play a very physical game. Take Richards out of that lineup, the only other player that is physical on a consistent basis in that top 9 is Scott Hartnell and Carcillo/Asham.

Obviously Mike Richards can win a game by himself, but for you to suggest he does so more then Kovy proves you have not seen him play... Not to mention that he plays on the Thrashers...I would love to see how many points Richards produces if he were on the Thrash.

Agree, although I will say that all else equal a Canadian/American is more valuable in the NHL than a European, because they will likely speak English better, which helps at least marginally I would guess in terms of fitting in in the locker room, and they're extremely unlikely to get homesick and bolt, having grown up with the NHl as their goal.

Does Kovy play as well defensively as Richards?
The same physical side to his game, forecehcking?
Will he fight, stand up for his teammates?
Does Kovy have more blocked shots?

Quick answer is no, but those things aren't very exciting are they? Game 7 of the cup final, I take richards hands down.
