Quick answer is no, but those things aren't very exciting are they? Game 7 of the cup final, I take richards hands down.
Does Richards command double coverage like Kovy?
Can Richards score like Kovy?
Can Richards break a defence down by himself like Kovy?
Can Richards take over a game with his skill like Kovy?

Quick answer is no, but those thins mean nothing other then to make highlight reels right?

And how can you defintively say you would rather Richards in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals? Have you seen either him or Kovy in that posistion before? Regardless one game does not mean Richards is the better player...

Obviously Kovalchuk is vastly more talented.

If I'm building a team from scratch I want both of them. If I have to choose?

You NEED an emotional leader to win a cup and I just don't see that in Kovalchuk. Richards has it in spades and he's only just turned 24. Pavel Bure dominated teams in the regular season. Dead-puck era Yzerman was certainly very productive, but he wasn't offensively dominant. Who won more cups? Besides, Richards is still a PPG player. Even now Kovalchuk only has 7 more points than Richie.

You might think I'm overstating the whole intangibles argument and maybe I am, but I watched Keith Primeau nearly single-handedly will the Flyers to a cup a few seasons ago. That one cup run pushed me into the intangibles camp forever.

Kovalchuk with no hesitation. I can only think of 2 players i'd rather have on my team then him.

Agreed. It's no coincidence that Philly elevated their player a couple of years ago at the same time Mike Richards started to elevate his game.

Kovalchuk is a tremendous franchise player, and I would certainly want someone like him as my offensive leader, but he's never singlehandedly carried Atlanta to the next level the way a guy with Richards leadership qualities could during the playoff time.

No doubt Kovalchuk is and absolute beast and most of the time unstoppable, and the better player. But from a Flyers perspective, I'd rather have Richards who can play every situation and is very important to his team (Kovalchuk is just as important if not more to Thrashers). Any other team I would take Kovalchuk, but on the Flyers, I'd rather have Richards. We already have goal scorers such as Gagne, Briere, Carter, Knuble, Lupul, we really don't need another.

If you already know who you think is better then why make this poll unless to convince others that you're right. It all makes sense now.

Unfortunately a lot of people see Mike Richards as the "true" NHLer. You can find any idiot to score points. How many Mike Richards are there in the NHL? I bet you'd find more 50 goal scorers than you would find true leaders who can take over a game like he can while still putting up top 15 NHL forward numbers.

Richards is great, but he's simply outclassed in this poll.

Kovalchuk. But I hate Richards. But I also admit he's a fantastic player.

Because Richards can bring more to the table than Kovy. Kovy is not the guy I want to kill an important PK, win an important faceoff, play a more physical game, block a shot etc. There are very few all around players in the league like Richards, and it's the little things that help win you important games, not to mention Kovy has a whopping 7 more points than Richards. No brainer IMO.

what is Mike Richard's Contrat Like? (caphit?)

Depending what he makes I might go with him, I assume Kovalchuks will probably be in the 8M range when he signs a new one

Richards is signed for $5.75m from now until the end of time! Like 12 years. Just know he's a career Flyer at $5.75m .

Kovalchuk is the better player for sure. But I think I would take Richards. Kovalchuk is going to get like 8 million or more and Richards contract is much more cap friendly. Kovalchuk is to streaky of a player and is not consistant from year to year.

With Richards you know your looking at 80 points a year and being a leader and playing great two way physical hockey.

You can build a team around Kovalchuk. You complement a good team and make it great with Richards.

I would slightly favor Richards and 2.25M in capspace then(2M or less in capspace is the point I would go toward Kovy)

Mike Richards is one of the players I think about when I think of "hockey player." He hits, he plays great defense, he puts the puck in the back of the net, he fights and stands up for himself and his teammates. Not many weakspots in his game. Ilya is great no doubt, but if I'm building a team I'm gonna take the gritty, scoring center everytime. That's just me though.

It's a no brainer in my mind, doesn't mean I'm right. The whole purpose of this thread was to get a larger opinion as to who the better player is, dont like it, dont read it, very simple...

Great poll.

I said Kovy....Richards does stuff you can teach/coach into a player. Kovalchuk does stuff you're only born with.
