Flyers to sign Johan Backlund

According to sources in Sweden and NHL.com Across the Pond columnist Bill Meltzer, the identity of the Swedish goaltender the Flyers are poised to sign is Timra IK goalie Johan Backlund.

Backlund, who will turn 28 in July, has played on the Swedish national team and is considered a solid Elitserien goaltender. His upside as an NHLer would more likely be as a backup than as a starter.

Not quite as exciting as signing Gustavsson would be, but there is speculation that Niittymaki's hip injuries have never fully healed, and that he is out the door this offseason.

Gustavsson have been playing like a mad man but he has stated that he will stay in SEL for at least one more year.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that, but I have obviously heard about his amazing play this year. Can you tell me more about Backlund?

Translated with (http://www.stars21.com/translator/sw...o_english.html)

Large Plant goalkeeper with a low own style of play and good reflexes. A pretty complete goalkeeper who improved their evenness in recent seasons. High potential exists. Weaknesses in the (club) technology and the balance can be improved. (by Ulf Andersson)

Always a good idea to add depth but the Flyers seem to be in the same position they were 10 or so years ago when a top goaltender could possibly lead them to a cup. Not that a top goaltender is easy to come by but that area seems to have been their achilles heel on at least a couple occasions, mostly during the non-cap era.

It doesn't matter. Goaltending is overrated in the playoffs.

I remember an other goalie who came to the NHL in the age of 28...his name was Ni-Ni-Ni Nicklas Backstrom. I doubt that the Wild have known that he will be the #1 goaltender.

He had some outstanding numbers in the SEL, though. This guy seems pretty average, but they obviously see something they like.

2001 Roy
2002 Hasek
2003 Brodeur
2004 Khabibulin
2006 Osgood
2007 Giguere/Bryzgalov
2008 Osgood

Compare Biron to all of these goalies. Is he really worse than Osgood, Khabibulin or Giguere? He sure as heck could have won the cup playing behind the Red Wings last season or the Ducks in 07 (in my opinion of course) Over the last 10 years the Flyers as a team haven't been good enough to win it all.

Actually i meant to go back to the flyers team 10( i don't remember the exact years) or so years ago when they opted for guys like Hackett and an over-the-hill Vanbiesbrouck as key pieces to a top team.

Yes Biron likely would have sufficed in the Wings net last season. No, i dont think he is equal to or better than Khabibulin or Giguere

At the time Kabibulin was a very good goalie and earned 4 all-star appearances from 1998-2003. Giguere is a great goalie and has been for awhile. Biron hasn't done anything notable ever aside from his incredible performance in the playoffs last year. The Red Wings are irrelevant because they were just far and above everyone else. If the Flyers can become as dominating as the Wings were then you'll have a point. Until then it's irrelevant.
