Game Notes

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 31 shots Wednesday at Mellon Arena in the Penguins’ 2-0 win against the Calgary Flames accomplishing his fourth shutout on the season and 15th of his career.
Few goalies have done that better since January 1st. Fleury is 20-10-4 with three shutouts and has allowed two or fewer goals over at least 60 minutes in 17 of those games.
Goaltending coach Gilles Meloche called Fleury’s performance Wednesday night his finest since the epic 55-save game in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final last year.

It was also one of the best games the Pens had this season, bouncing back from the defeat Sunday against the Flyers.
Defensemen Kris Letang and Hal Gill scored the goals for the Penguins. Aside the shot that put finals numbers, Gill in particular had a good game on defense, facing Calgary's best player, winger Jarome Iginla.
The Penguins outhit the tough Calgary team, 44-25. Defenseman Brooks Orpik led the way with 10.

Centers Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, after failing to record a shot between them in a home loss Sunday against Philadelphia, each recorded an assist in a victory Wednesday against Calgary.
Geno matched his career high with 106 points, his total from last season, and Crosby moved within four points of becoming the record 30th Penguins player to hit the 100-point plateau.
Over the last 18 games, he has 9 goals and 16 assists while Sid 7 and 17.

Coach Dan Bylsma praised the team, but is not particularly impressed with wingers Petr Sykora and Ruslan Fedotenko, saying they "need to get to their games more often".
Fedotenko was demoted to L3, while Matt Cooke played with Malkin and Sykora on L2, plus some shifts as left winger with Sid and Geno. Most probably he'll again be used this way.

Defenseman Philippe Boucher - who had two screws surgically implanted in a weight-bearing bone in his left foot February 13 - was activated off IR and he is cleared to play, but might remain scratched.
However, coach Bylsma said the plans to get Boucher back on the ice for a handful of games, stating "defensemen need to have their timing before the playoffs."

Unfortunately, the Penguins announced Sunday that center Mike Zigomanis, recovering from a surgery he had on his right shoulder, is out for the season. His last game was December 3.
He has a good chance to be re-signed at least for the next season and remain in The Burgh.

Decisive game, Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to be the netminder again.

“There have been questions about him along the way, but most of those came from the media. Those weren’t questions anybody in this organization was asking.”

Game Notes

In their quest for the playoffs, the Rangers wasted the only game they had in hand against a team that is not bound to make them.
Last Thursday, they blew a 4-1 lead built by Nikolai Zherdev, Nik Antropov, Chris Drury and Markus Naslund over the final 20:21 of regulation, against the Atlanta Thrashers.
Ilya Kovalchuk, Colby Armstrong and Todd White added to a previous Slava Kozlov's goal to tie the game at 4.
After a no-goal overtime, New York lost the game in the shootout 4-5 - Todd White with the game-winner - and an important point in the standings.
In the remaining few games, New York will face after the Penguins at Mellon, the Devils, Canadien and Flyers at home and will be on the road to meet the Hurricanes, Bruins and Flyers again.

Defenseman Derek Morris had two assists, marking his first multi-point game in 11 appearances since he was obtained from Phoenix at the trade deadline.

Mad about the outcome, coach John Tortorella possibly will make a line change for today's game, swapping Markus Naslund and Fredrik Sjostrom, who seems to be promoted to what's regarded to be the second line with Drury and Antropov. Naslund most probably will play on L3, centered by Brandon Dubinsky with right winger Nikolai Zherdev. This is not confirmed yet, though.

Zherdev (our early season nemesis against the Rangers) is frustrating Torts because he sometimes cruises through shifts or games, especially defensively.
He still leads the Rangers in scoring with 56 points with seven games remaining, but is playing on L3, now. Curiously, he leads the team in +/- as well, with a +9.

Winger Nik Antropov scored his fifth goal in 11 games since the Rangers acquired him March 4 from Toronto. He scored 11 goals and 13 assists in 26 career games against the Pens.
The New York Rangers have the NHL’s best penalty killing mark with a kill rate of 87.7 %, but the second-worst power play converting only 14.4% of the chances.

Like the Pens, the Rangers are relatively healthy.
Monday they announced that defenseman Michal Rozsival will be sidelined because of an "undisclosed lower-body injury" (his left knee).
He was injured during the 2nd period of when he was crunched against the boards by Senators forward Shean Donovan, but is expected to be back in action next week.
Rookie Mike Sauer has been his replacement and has impressed with solid play.

Goalie Steve Valiquette made his second start in Atlanta this season. With three games in four days, coach John Tortorella wanted to find a spot to rest starter Henrik Lundqvist, who had started 20 of the previous 21 games.
One of the best goalies in the league, Hank will be up against Pittsburgh, a team he gives headaches, compiling a 15-8-3 record, 2.19 goals against average and 91.4 save percentage.

Ah, Sean Avery will play.

Amazing GDT, as always.

Damn excited about this game, it's huge. Hopefully we can dominate and continue to show the NHL what this team is capable of come playoff time.

Awesome GDT! The Pens just have to play their game to win. How will the ice be after last nights concert?

URG! So i got Lundqvist as my fantasy goalie and basically need him to get a shut out today to not be eliminated from the playoffs. I guess a 1-0 pens win might do it too but a shut out would secure me a victory.

Gotta admin Kinguin, you do the best GDTs!

I'm so stoked about his game....this has so much promise.
So much on the line...animosity...rivalry...and both teams are hot.

Go Pens go! .

Two teams that look nothing like the clubs that met in all five previous tussles. This should be great.

Another ol' four pointer today. Hopefully, we continue to play 60 minutes. That to me might be the most encouraging aspect of our changes.

Supreme GDT as usual, Kinguin. You can never have enough Alyonka. I can give her a break for the Red Wings cap since her Dad played for them for so many years.

Also, it was great of Shelly Anderson to once again remind us that Marc and Jordan Staal were brothers. I almost forgot.

Thx, PA.

I'm really getting obsessed with Alyonka, but I don't accept the Red Wings cap.
Oooooooooooooooh!
Is there some hot pop singer that actually roots for the Pens?

Don't be hard on Shelly, she did a great job. With so many Staals in the league, it's really tough to remember who is brother of who.

Christina Aguilera?

I know it's tough to not name Jarrett Stoll as one of Jordan's brother. I mean, his first name sounds like the fourth brother's anyway.

This is actually a REALLY huge game for the rangers. Their remaining schedule is probably the worst of anyone's with the exception of maybe Carolina. (so good so good so good)

I would love to see Max Talbot do a Cooking with Alyonka segment and just hit on her the entire time. Of course, Larionov's minions could come after him then.

I hate to nitpick here, but I think your player stats are wrong (they must be a from a few games ago).

Great GDT though, we all really appreciate the work you put into these!

Great GDT. This is going to be our first match up with the Rags since Avery's return. I don't like to say it because of how much I hate him, but he is probably going to have a good showing. Be ramped up almost as if it was the playoffs last year again.

Gotta watch out for him.

All in all I think this is going to be a very hard game for our boys, the Rags have had good showings with us all season. I do not think this will be any different.

Itll be a flip of 4-3 regardless which teams wins, ether 4-3 pens or 3-4 Rags.

Lets just hope our team comes up on top. GO PENS! GO GENO!

I hate playing the Rags at MSG...they always play such a stingy game there. The fact that this game is in Pittsburgh makes me a bit more confident.

Malkin needs to have a huge game today. Ovechkin had a friggin 4 point game yesterday and trails by a mere 6 points.
