http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app/?serv...ticleid=416204

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’3”, 205-pound left wing James van Riemsdyk to a multiyear entry-level contract beginning with the 2009-10 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Van Riemsdyk has also signed an amateur tryout for the remainder of the current season and has been assigned to the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. He will be available to play in tonight’s Phantoms-Albany River Rats game at the Wachovia Spectrum (Tickets).

The Flyers could theoretically add Sbisa and JVR for a playoff run...scary.

That being said, I can only see Sbisa getting a spot if there is an injury, JVR needs some games under his belt so hopefully the Phantoms make the playoffs.

Its about time. I fear the JVR-Carter combo in the future. Best of luck to him.

Would he even be eligible to play in the playoffs? His ELC doesn't kick in until July 1st.

Correct, he wouldn't be available for the NHL.

Sooo does this mean that he can't play in the playoffs? I read that he was also signed to a pro try-out or something like that, so hypothetically speaking, can he be called up come playoff time if he excels quickly at the AHL level??

In otherwords, can we fast forward his contract so it can be in effect ASAP with the try-out contract?

He can't play in the NHL playoffs because he doesn't have an NHL contract for the 2008-2009 season. His NHL entry level contract starts in 2009-2010.

JVR is playing for the Phantoms on a strictly AHL contract separate from his NHL contract which goes into effect next season. This is pretty common practice when teams sign players in the Spring.

Oh well. I'm just glad we finally signed this kid. I think I can safely speak for most Flyers' fans when I say I was beginning to lose patience. Glad he's under contract.

Is he expected to get a year with the Phantoms or is he pencilled into the Flyers lineup next year?

I think it depends on off season personnel issues.

Does Knuble re-sign?
Will Lupul be moved?

I'd like to see him work on his conditioning with the 'Phantoms', as with the core of forwards on the Flyers...he's much more likely to get more icetime in the AHL. I could see him in stints with the Flyers, but I'd like to see him develop in the AHL, slow and steady...just like Bobby Ryan.

That would be incredibly stupid, at least on the issue of JVR.

I'm terrified at what he'll be able to do in three years, provided he develops well.

I'd expect him to pull a Bobby Ryan, barring a very good training camp and what happens in the offseason.

I agree with you. If Knuble is lost via FA, I expect him to be in a Flyers' sweater next fall. As far as ice time is concerned though, I think he'd get a fair at the NHL level. Stevens does a pretty good job spreading ice time in the top 9 aside from Richards and Carter.

Even if he signed an NHL contract, if you don't sign a player by deadline day, they can't play in the playoffs.

I think that's the rule anyway...
