Not that I would want him with the Habs but what core?

Plekanec, Komisareck, Higgins & A Kost. I know they are having a terrible year but these are still highly talented young players that form a solid core. Partner them with some good veterens and add in a couple upcoming rookies and I don't see why we are so desperate for Vinny.

Good lord no, trading Markov for Lecavalier would doom the Canadiens for years. Markov is one of the league's best defenseman and frankly our best player. This is made worse by the fact the Canadiens are weak on defense as it is only going to be amplified by the loss of Markov. That would mean Roman Hamrilk is the best defenseman on the team, which is most certainly not enough.

From Tampa's point of view, by the team they turn their franchise around, Markov's contract will have ended and he would be likely to test the market for a better team. What Tampa needs is prospects, either via the trade or through draft picks. That said even if Tampa wanted to trade Vinny for Higgins, Plekanec, Subban and picks; Vinny's absolutely ridiculous contract is too long to accept.

What will become of the Vincent Lecavalier five to seven years from today? Will he be a point per game player or a marginal contribution to the second or even third line?

The Habs are one of the only teams with enough cap space to take on Lecavalier's contract without having to shed any salary what so ever. Koivu, Tanguay, Kovalev, Schneider, Lang, Dandenault, Kostopoulos, Komisarek, Bouillon and Brisebois are all UFA's this summer. They'll want to retain a few of them, but there's still plenty of cap space.

Although Lecavalier's NTC doesn't kick in until July 1st, he was told by the Lightning's ownership that he'd be contacted for his opinion on any trade possibility prior to that date. I personally wouldn't trust that one second with those guys (ask Dan Boyle), but it was still said anyway...

They told him they would ask him where he wanted to go, they did not say anything about only trading with that team.

He does not have a NTC and it should not be treated as he does. If they want to trade him to Edmonton or Phoenix then they should.

Of course. They can trade him wherever THEY want to as his NTC doesn't kick in until July 1st... and they'll do what THEY want anyway as Boyle explained to Lecavalier in February. I wouldn't trust them one second! Lecavalier's best bet is to hope to stay until after his NTC kicks in, then sit out and request a trade where HE wants to go... but HE has too much class.
