I'm french and I swear an Oath I'll never buy a game in French.

Time to buy online.

Really don't care about this law, it's just too bad for the business owners in Quebec. One of the dumbest law I've seen, especially during an economic crisis.

I didn't even know they made video games with a french voice over. I learn new things everyday on HF.

wow... this whole thing smcks of an april fools joke that was passed on an extra day. bilingual and french only manuals are already pretty commonplace... it's been that way snce i got my super nintendo in oh, say, 1995, so i have a hard time believeing quebec had to threaten a lawsuit in 1999. having said that, i am unaware of any complete french video game dubs or subtitles that exist in canada... nor do i see where the sudden outcry comes from, as this has been the way life has worked for 30 years. laws don't spring up overnight, they are debated, etc.

if any companies were to do such a thing, the "market" would not be limited to just quebec. they could make bilingual versions available to the whole country, as they do with movies. not only that, but they rush french movies out to be on time and in theatres at the same time as the english movies. they don't miss a beat. i don't see how video games would be any different. if thi was a real issue, companies could look to EA for support... they had one version of NHL (06 I believe) where you could choose to have the in-game graphics (showing penalties, etc.) come up in French... it was far from being completely bilingual, but that's the ONLY time i've ever seen french used in a game period.

EDIT: Both the Toronto Star and CJAD reports that the law would only prohibit English only vames for sale in Quebec IF a French version exists. But again, the only sources I've seen or the story are this and The Toronto Star, both on April Fool's Day. I still stand by my guns that this is a joke.

yopu guys really need to learn how to read articles, to Joystick article refers to the Toronto Star article which states that Store in QC cannot sell an ENGLISH ONLY title if a FRENCH VERSION IS AVAILABLE, meaning that if there's none, it will be legal to sell the english version.

it changes almost nothing and the "Joystick" article misinterpreted the Toronto Star article.

if a ntsc bilingual version isnt available, the government will NOT prevent it's sale.

My understanding is that if the game is available in french, only the french version will be sold. If it isnt available in french than you can buy it in english.

The article is slightly unclear (or I may be just tired and not have read it properly)

Still sucks though.

Actually, that is incorrect. Read details here:

http://technaute.cyberpresse.ca/jeux...ses-a-pied.php
Quote:

Basically, if there's a french version of a video game released somewhere in the world, then stores here can't sell the english versions till they get their hands on those french copies. They have to be able to sell both. If there's no french versions at all, there are no restrictions about the english versions.

The whole "protect french langage" thing is getting ridiculous.

Reminds me of that promise of having a discount for Québec music... The first thing I want to do if that happens is buy a cd from Unexpect and ask for the discount.

Who cares? Just buy online. It'll probably cost you the same in delivery as it costs to drive to the store.

Gah stupid Quebec. Good thing I only have another 3 years + a few months of living here to do...New-Brunswick sometimes gets some games a little late but at least it's doesn't have these idiotic laws.

I don't want to buy games in french just because they are available. The only thing I watch in french is hockey. Games are meant to be played in english (or japanese for jRPGs but hey, I want to understand them at the very least =p).

How hard is it to sell english and french versions so that people can choose. They sell it in english if the french version doesn't exist, so it's not like it's a crazy concept.

And I fail to see how this protects the french language. People learning french in school and applying it in their daily lives is what will help protect it.

Well, the only games I want to buy in the future are Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and Guild Wars 2 and I'm pretty sure I will be able to buy them all online, so at least there's that.

Well there you go, that makes more sense.

Still kinda dumb to have to wait, but they can't not sell in english.

How many games are even made in French? I can't imagine a whole lot...

And even there are, they'd be other regions, and wouldn't play on North American consoles.

This whole thing is a huge joke.

Which kind of makes it a grey area... Aren't PAL version released way later than NTSC? If so, how is it useful in any way?

Anybody know if this would make the ordering of english games online illegal? Meaning, making it illegal for vendors to send out english games to Quebec. This law is already ridiculous as is, but that would simply bring the idiocy of this law to a whole other level.
