Art Ross or Hart?

Which trophy is "better"? That is, if you had to rank all the trophies according to prestige, what would rate higher, the Art Ross or the Hart.

I chose Art Ross because it isn't subject to debate. The best offensive force in the game gets the trophy, while the Hart is decided by a bunch of journalists.

being ranked as the MVP has much more prestige than having the most points.

One is earned on the ice.....the other is voted on by people who don't even play. Enough said.

These days, I actually think it is more of an accomplishment to win the Lester B. Pearson trophy over the Hart considering the Pearson is voted on by the peers you play against...not someone sitting behind a desk.

Hart, by far. If you win the Hart, that means your team is doing well and winning. Winning > Scoring points, or in other words, Team > Self

Plus the Pearson is "Most Outstanding" player whereas Hart is "Most Valuable".

the art ross has the highest % of its winners that head to the hall of fame out of all the trophies.

I definitely agree with the OP. Cold hard facts > Opinions everytime.

The trick is to win them both like Thornton did.

I don't want to say the Art Ross is worthless.

It isn't.

But in many cases, it bares no meaning in the big picture.

The Art Ross has a lot more to do with a team's offensive structure and a player having a productive injury free season.

Pretty much.

The Hart Trophy is the MVP, where a player might not have lead the league in goals or points, but without him the team wouldn't be near as good.

I really think it's like this:

1. Hart
2. Vezina
3. Norris
4. Rocket Richard
5. Art Ross

I'd say the Pearson, because those are voted by the people who actually play against you. They would know who is the best better then anyone else.

But for the poll I voted for the Hart. It's awarded to the MVP, enough said.

art ross is much better than richard.

only 2 scoring champions are not or will not be in the HHOF (st louis and herb cain, who won during WW2 when 1/2 the NHL was minor leaguers).

some of the goal leaders

cheechoo
simmer
gare
stoughton
leach
bondra
tkachuk
mogilny
weiiland
hejduk
thoms
lynn patrick
gaye stewart
horvath
odie cleghorn

a couple of those got into, or may get into, the HHOF.

many of those goal leaders won for the reason you said the art ross is not so important--teammates.

i would also put norris above vezina.

A bunch of Journalists whose sole job is to spend 100% of their time watching Hockey and making these articles and voting.

The Hart is easily the more prestigious award.

How the hell is it fair to goalies and defensemen and complete forwards to think otherwise?

I'm willing to bet ATLEAST 75% of the NHLers don't watch a single minute of hockey.

Hart is voted on by people who actually watch games.

IMO, Joe Thornton's vote would be skewed because he plays EC teams once a season, if that. Because of this, he'll prob vote for the player he sees most often, and prob end up voting for Iginla, instead of someone more deserving like AO or Malkin.

Same thing for EC players voting for their own conference as oposed to the west. It's not an east/west bias, its simply lack of games played vs half of the league.

Oh, and yea, Hart is much more presitgious. You're the most vital piece to a (usually) contending team.

2nd would be art ross. It combines goals and assists. Pretty much shows that you are a complete player offensively and better than most, if not all, forwards in the world. This is also much more presitgious than the Richard because goal scorers can mooch off a good play maker (Guerin, Cheechoo, G. Murray off Thornton, Gagne and Hejduk off of Forsberg, etc).

Well when Jagr was winning his art ross trophies in 2000 and 1995, IMO he was the best player regardless of what some biased canadian journalists think. They screwed him twice, hence why he has 3 lester b pearson trophies.

Oh Please........We can debate to death that Pronger did not deserve the Hart. I would agree on that count, but Lindros did and its not like Pronger ran away with it. He won by a single point and was the clear Runner up even if he did not win, close to deserving the win.

Lindros carried the Flyers more than Jagr carried the pens and tied Jagr in scoring in 95. Seeing as you always love piling credit on linemates....Jagr was centered by a Prime Ron Francis and with A still high scoring Luc Robitaille, Larry Murphy on the backend and others, like Cullen, Mullen, Kevin Stevens, etc still on the team. Lindros had Renberg and Leclair and, Brind Amour. Factor in that Lindros was better defensively, and more of a physical force and its clear.

For the record, most of the Journalists who get a vote are not Canadian.
