As a Leafs fan living in Ottawa I get to watch alot of both team and actually think a trade involving Kubina would work better for both these two teams.
Kubina has a contract that expires at the end of next season and there is a limited window this summer where Burke can make a trade without his consent. So if Kubina doesn't sign for an extension Burke has got to get some assets for him this summer. Kubina would take less for the Senators to acquire but would fit there needs more because he is better defensively then Kaberle and plays with more of an edge. Kaberle is a better offensive defencemen but he is also very soft and with a team that already has a few soft offensive oriented defencemen in Picard, Bell, Campoli they can't afford to have another soft player.
As for what it would take I will start with:
Kubina
for
Cody Bass (young extremely hard working physical player).
Jason Smith (a bad contract that expires at the end of next year who could be a fill in veteran player for the Leafs for a year. This bad contract won't hurt the Leafs as they aren't near the cap anyways and would give the Senators a little more flexibility).
2010 conditional first rounder (Leafs receive the pick in 2010 as long as the Sens make the playoffs if not the pick goes to 2011)
Burke and Murray have both never been shy in making trades so they both have the type of personalities to trade within conference.
A glaring problem with this deal is the key piece to the leafs(1st rounder) could easily be 5-6 years from being beneficial even if they pick wisely. Thats pushing the limits on the most patient of men.

Not to mention it's conditional. I don't think Burke trades Kubina for anything less than a first.
I would say that this wouldn't work solely because of Ottawa's cap situation. Kubina's cap hit is way too high for the Sen's to take on. I will agree that it'd be nice to have a player like Kubina but not at his salary.
I also agree that almost any trade that involves a 1st from Ottawa (our 1st that is) is a non-starter.
I just realized that we could have a Kuba-Kubina pairing, hmmm.....
I agree that Kubina would be a better fit in Ottawa than Kaberle but I just don't see the the Sens and Leafs ever making a significant trade with each other. Plus, like someone said earlier Ottawa never trades their own first rounders.
just fyi for sens fans turning this down b/c they see a 1st rounder, you are aware its a first in 2010 right?? not this year??
Next years draft is not as deep as this year, and I don't see your team playing as poorly next year under clouston. I would expect your team 5-8th spot in the east
(probly 6/7) maybe even higher if your younger players improve (all of this depends on your goaltending not being the usual epic fail though). So it will probly be a 15-20ish pick in a weaker draft next year, its not that bad. And kubina's 5M contract only has 1 year leaving you guys with more cap space for the big 2010 summer.
Don't overestimate picks.
With all that said, ottawa lacks prospect depth, so im not so sure how much they would want to do this on that logic. I also live in ottawa, but I almost never watch the sens, but I still hear the news regarding how their team is doing. My one friend has some man-crush on J-Bo and is insistent they are going to get him this summer, and this trade would put a damper on his hopes and dreams. I think this all depends on the long and short term plan of the sens, are they still trying to win? or in some sort of lame re-build mode.
Oh yeah. Foligno for Kubs isn't enough to make Burke budge. Now if it were Kubina + one of our 2nds for Foligno and Sens 1st 09, then Burke would probably consider it. Kubina and Kaberle are not moving (almost 100% on this) unless a 1st or futures of roughly equal value are coming back to us.
If Burke did it i imagine he would trade Foligno and Ott 1st for a top-5 pick and maybe some scraps, effectively turning Kubina into one of the big 5.
Also what are we going to do with Mike Fisher? He's a good player and a better guy but honestly we have no use for centres of a caliber anything less than first line. Fisher isn't even close to being on our radar.
He would be cheaper to get. Willing to roll the dice on his health.
A healthy MVR 22-24TOI all situations
10-15G 35-40Pts
MVR is great. He just seems to have terrible luck being on the receiving end of some bad hits. What would you be willing to trade to get him. I think the leafs are gonna move at least one dman this year so any of the older ones could be had.
