Trent Hunter (2M) for Vancouver's #1 Pick (possibly 19th-21st overall)

As an islanders fan I'd make this move, we'd probably have to give up something more to get that pick though.

The Isles aren't going to trade Hunter.

And, I don't really see him being worth a first in a strong draft anyway. Maybe he could attract that at the deadline, but not at the draft when the value of picks tends to be inflated.

Agree 100%.

GM's value 1st rounders in this draft pretty high (to the point of 29 of them not dealing any at the trading deadline - and the one that did, owned two 1st round picks).

Would like Hunter on the Canucks - for the very reasons the Islanders won't deal him.

Its tempting, especially if the canucks lose in the first round, but I dont think that I would do it, especially with hunter's contract being so affordable.

I like Hunter but I think if we can get a late 1st rounder for him, we should do it. This trade definitely helps the Canucks, he has an affordable contract, and is signed long term. The Islanders can get veterans through free agency but they should continue to stockpile picks and build with youth.

Why on earth would we want to move Hunter? From my perspective, he is a great piece to build off of. He's like 28 years old and signed for 4-5 more years cheap.

I don't think he's fast but he sure as hell isn't slow, and if he is his hustle makes him look like he's got some wheels.

Hunter is worth more to a team like the Isles than a late first rounder would be.

A rebuilding team needs to have veteran players like him who are still in their prime. Trading him for a late first rounder would be counterproductive to a rebuilding team.

Agreed, nor do the Isles need another low first rounder. Neither team makes this deal.

Agree 100%.

I am not suggesting this hypothetical makes sense for the Canucks, either.

However, from an NYI standpoint, there comes a point when you have to give up the endless focus with collecting picks (read: players who, for the most part, will not impact your NHL roster for years) and start moving forward with your reliable, in their prime assets. Hunter, no star, is nonetheless a very reliable asset. And while you could potentially "replace" his stats via trade/free agency, you do not replace roster cohesion and the other assets a long-time contributor brings to a roster. Some people misguidedly scoff at intangibles. Hunter is a "glue guy" for this Isles team.
