Ottawa-Edmonton Firesale

To Ottawa:
Ales Hemsky
Andrew Cogliano
Tom Gilbert
Ladislav Smid
Robert Nilsson
1st round pick

To Edmonton:
Heatley
Kelly
Volchenkov
Donovan

Heatley-Gagner-Eberle
O'Sullivan-Horcoff-Kotalik
Penner-Kelly-Donovan
Moreau-Brodziak-Pisani

Souray-Volchenkov
Grebeshkov-Visnovsky
Chorney-Strudwick

Roloson
Deslauriers

Nilsson-Spezza-Alfredsson
Comrie-Cogliano-Hemsky
Foligno-Fisher-Neil
Ruutu-Regin-Shannon

Campoli-Gilbert
Phillips-Bell
Smid-Lee

Why Edmonton does this? It adresses every need we have right now. Gives us a supertstar upfront, a shutdown defenseman, checking center and bottom-six winger.

Why Ottawa does this? With the cap dropping, they have to get rid of one of the big 3's contracts, so Heatley going sounds ok if enough depth is coming back the other way. The Sens get three guys who can play top-six roles, and two young defenseman who can fit in with the core there.

Sounds great, then Spezza and Hemsky can set up ......... for goals.

Looks like this solves all of Edmonton's problems without giving anything terribly painful in return (good sign of a bad trade). They get a huge upgrade at forward (Hemsky for Heatley) in exchange for a downgrade at defense (Gilbert for Volchenkov), one pretty good young player in Cogliano, a couple of depth players and a first round pick.

I don't think Ottawa would be too keen on this deal - the picks don't represent a lot of value to a team whose captain is in the twilight of his career.

Meh, not really. We fill a hole at left wing, only to open one up at right wing (Eberle isn't going to be playing on the top line next year, and we haven't re-signed Kotalik yet). We take on a bunch of salary, with a couple of contracts having only one year before UFA, while giving up nothing but young guys, mostly on cheap contracts, and a first rounder. We give up a ton of youth in a deal that doesn't make us good enough to win a cup, and we risk losing Volchenkov after a single season (or having to pay him a ton).

I'd agree this isn't a deal Ottawa would likely make, and it still is something Edmonton would consider. Still, I'd say it's too much youth to give up, too much salary to take on, and it still doesn't fill all of our holes.

OTP why are you so hell bent on blowing up the Oilers? Every trade you've proposed (and there's been at least 5 threads in the last week or so) is terrible, awful, and any NHL general manager would laugh in your face. the funny thing is you still make these threads! take a hint, your trade proposals suck balls. people tell you that every time and they still come up. this trade is awful, you will rarely, if EVER, see a trade that involves TEN players/assets. Ridiculous. You basically want to trade an entire line to Ottawa. Murray would spit at you (and by spit i mean talk with words containing the letter "s")

Hemsky needs a Heatley, so trade Hemsky+ for Heatley+?

FAIL

How many times are you going to say that? Did you expect Gretzky to be traded? Anything can happen...

Even when a good proposal for Edmonton comes along you somehow overrate the Oilers players and turn it into a "terrible proosal".

I will laugh so hard the day Heatley does get traded. You'll never regret the words you keep saying but to be more serious, No way Edmonton does this. Your making a team worse by giving away our only star player (besides Souray and Vishnovsky).

He actually has only 5 years left.

For me, IF Heatley is too be traded, it needs to involve one of Souray or Visnovsky coming back to start. I'm not suggesting that I am all for trading Heatley but if it were to happen we would have to fill one of our biggest needs which is a #1 D.

i'd prefer
Heatley, Donovan, Smith, Kelly for Hemsky, Eberle/1st, Smid, Cogliano

I think that's pretty close salary wise as well. Oilers get salary relief in a year from donovan and smith, and sens get to spread out heatley's money to more, albeit worse, players.

The truth is both teams were bad enough that really anything could happen.

would definitely have to take out Hemmer, or both Cogliano and the 1st. I could see this happening actually, weird as that seems.

You know, having read this proposal, I have to ask:

Who exactly is doing the fire sale here?

bad trade for edmonton, giving up youth with alot of potential for older guys, ya they get heatley, but they have hemsky, what they need is a number 1 centre to play with Hemsky, maybe do a trade for Spezza without giving up hemsky.

say Cogliano and a 1st ----- spezza
