Led by a great performance by goalie Cam Ward, the Carolina Hurricanes clinched a spot in the post-season by beating Pittsburgh in overtime, after a 2-2 tie in regulation. He stoppped 33 of 35 shots including a Sidney Crosby breakaway in the 1st period and a penalty shot by Evgeni Malkin in the third.
In a well fought game, Tyler Kennedy opened the score and Chad LaRose tied in the 1st period and Eric Staal made it 2-1 in the 2nd, taking advantage of a Matt Cooke turnover.
Already in the 3rd period, brother Jordan Staal tied the game again putting final numbers in the regulation, with Anton Babchuk scoring the winner in overtime.

Crosby's 12 game, and Malkin's 6 game point streaks were halted. Malkin still leads the NHL with 108.
Crosby has a point in 16 of his last 17 games, with 9 goals and 18 assists over that span.
Pittsburgh is 15-2-4 since Dan Bylsma was named interim head coach.
Jordan Staal, with his goal and an assist, set a single-season career high in points with 44.

Winger Ruslan Fedotenko was questionable in the days prior to yesterday's game because of an undisclosed injury suffered against New Jersey on Wednesday in which he didn't play in the 3rd period, but got better and was back in the action against the Canes.
He tallied 2 assists in the game and has six points in his last 3 games.

Even losing the game to the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday, the Penguins took another step towards the playoffs, earning one precious point, which combined with the defeats of the Sabres, Rangers and Panthers puts Pittsburgh in need of only 3 points in 4 games to clinch a spot, eliminating 9th place Florida.
And the shortcut is today' game, a direct match against the Panthers. A win gives the Penguins a spot in the post-season, as Florida could only reach 93 or 94 points in its remaining 3 games.

Center Mike Zigomanis definitely will only return to action in the 2009/10 season, while he recovers from surgery on his right shoulder.
Thursday afternoon, he visited Grandview Elementary school, who won the “Signs for Stanley” contest during the playoffs last season to merit the visit.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves in the game against the Canes. He is 12-1-3 in his last 16 games.
As it's a decisive game, and as the Penguins didn't play much in the last couple of weeks, he is expected to start against Florida.

The Panthers lost a game they couldn't afford to lose Friday night when a 3-game winning streak was snapped in the 1-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers in Sunrise, FL. Florida failed to score in four PP chances against one of the worst penalty killing teams in the NHL and haven't won 4 games in a row all season long.

Rich Peverley, who had gone 10 games without a goal, scored first for Atlanta and Greg Campbell tied the game in the second period. In the third Peverley again - the best player in the game - and Todd White, put final numbers to help the Thrashers get their 24th win of the season.

As the Hurricanes won their game against the Rangers on Thursday night, the Panthers keep having playoff hopes, prompting coach Pete DeBoer to send a 'thank you' note to longtime friend Paul Maurice, Carolina's coach. Buffalo's loss yesterday helped as well.

Goalie Craig Anderson stopped 29 of 32 shots in his fourth straight start. However, Pete DeBoer decided that Tomas Vokoun will start Sunday against Pittsburgh.

DeBoer started Greg Campbell as center of L3 with Ville Peltonen and Radek Dvorak Friday, as has been the case for much of the season. But by the second shift, Campbell was on L4 with Kamil Kreps sliding up.

Defenseman Steve Eminger, who was brought from Tampa to help the Panther is their playoff push, has been a healthy scratch for the last 6 games, being replaced by Nick Boynton.
Another D-Man, Bryan Allen, is recovering from a surgery in his knee ocurred in October 16, and most probably is out for the season.
Florida is relatively healthy, being Allen the only player on IR and/or unhealthy.

QUOTE

"It was a frustrating night. Nothing seemed to be working and we didn't feel that mojo on the bench that we've had in the past, for whatever reason, I don't know what it was."
-Panthers coach Pete DeBoer on the 1-3 loss to the Thrashers.

Great GDT!

Malkin will have a huuuuge night tonight. He's always pissed when he has an off game and comes out flying in the next one.

Let's go Pens!

Come on Geno...don't lead the league for 79 games and lose it in the last 3.

Odd question... in the "all-time regular season series" as listed in the original post, do everyone now just pretend that ties never happened? It says 28-28-4. So either that doesn't include ties or it doesn't include OTL/SOL. Just something I was curious about.

Great GDT as usual!

Great GDT and awesome picture. Quick note, you have Cooke on the LW of both the 2nd and 3rd line instead of Fedex. Nothing huge, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Let's get the win here, clinch a playoff spot, and make our run at the 4 seed.

Woot Woot I get to see the game! Hopefully we can close this out today with a W. It's not gonna be easy but hopefully Crosby and Malkin are geared up from not getting on the score sheet last night.

Get in, win, get out, end of story.

Great GDT as usual!
In the "All time regular season series records", for the sake of simplicity, and to mix with the results prior to 2005/06, wins and losses in regulation, overtime and shootouts are put as the first 2 numbers.
The third number only means tied games occurred before 05/6.
In the "2008-09 series records" I use the normal standard, as the results are restrict to the current season.

It would be hard to split all this in 3 separate sections, like 'before 05/6', 'after 05/6', 'current season'... because it's already difficult to put all the text I put, and either would be too little and/or tough to read, or it would take too much space from the picture, etc.

You could just add a 4th column to it and have it read (example) 35-23-4-3 with the 4th number being OTL.

Also, what place is 11st? lol, just messing, Awesome GDT! Love the picture, and props for the Latino tops and bottoms. I think a nice mix of all races and cultures will gear us up for game time!

I am probably in the minority here, but with the game starting at 5pm I would give Garon the nod tonight. And I would also reinsert Godard.
