Flipping in between watching the Oilers being eliminated and the Flames/Canucks game I can't believe how badly the Flames have dominated the Canucks. I think the biggest problem for the Flames this season has been Kiprusoff and how regularly he has been outplayed by the goaltender at the other end of the ice. Luongo has been up and down since his return but is keeping the Canucks in a must win game. Kiprusoff is doing just the opposite. Do you guys think the Flames can go anywhere in the post-season with Kiprusoff giving the Flames this kind of goaltending?
Another very strong period by the Flames. They picked it up exactly where they left off with pressure deep in the offensive zone. They continued to fire everything at Luongo from every place on the ice and finally after about ten minutes or so the whole team seemed to crash the net and after a few shots and rebbound attempts Iginla slid it just inside the skate of Luongo to tie this game up. Then the whole team took one shift off and the Canuck's Ohlund took advantage. He fired a shot that tipped off both Phaneuf and Leopold to sneak past Miikka and the Canucks took the one goal lead yet again. The Flames were a touch unlucky as Lundmark after a brilliant effort slipped it past the glove of Luongo, but nailed the post. Again though, the effort and determination is very much in evidence as the Flames have had only one bad shift all game.
The penalty kill got to work almost immediately as Iginla took a hooking cal that I thought was a pretty weak call. Nonetheless Miikka made a good save and then the Canucks didn't get another chance as the Flames defenders kept the Canucks from gaining the zone, and even managed to fore check at the offensive blueline. That's exactly how you kill a penalty. Two hundred feet down the ice from your own goal. Beautiful. The power play was a bit less powerful than in the first as they had trouble gaining the zone. When they finally did, there was some good passes, and a blistering point shot, but no one was screening the goalie, or creating any traffic out front. You will simply not score too many on Luongo unless there is lots of traffic out front. We need more Moss on the powerplay in my humble opinion.
Lundmark is absolutely brilliant. He works so hard, and creates all kinds of chances every time he's been out there. I adore his work ethic and the grit he brings to the team. Iginla was a beast all period and finally got rewarded for his efforts. Now if only Jokinen could get a bit of luck to swing his way. Cammalleri has seemed unable to get anything going, and truthfully has seemed invisible to me. As has Bertuzzi for that matter. Even though Phaneuf is partially responsible for the goal he accidentally tipped in, he's been fairly good defensively. Of course Kipper has been stellar. Too bad Luongo has been as well.
